![]() By Jack Lepiarz Oct. 23, 2006 I am officially announcing my candidacy for State Senate of Massachusetts at some point in the next ten years. I will run as a Democrat, and I will, hopefully, run one of the wittiest campaigns in the history of American politics. I do not plan on spewing political mumbo-jumbo. I plan on appealing to the one constituency that I feel is most underrepresented in American politics--the youth. I was a little intimidated by some of the writers when I first came to Useless Knowledge Magazine. I was only 16 years old when I joined the columnist staff, a junior in high school. I was 17 when I wrote my 100th article, and now I sit at my desk on a Sunday evening writing my 161st talking about politics--again. Only now, I'm not intimidated by old men in business suits--I like standing up to them--letting them know that, yes, I may be going to one of the most liberal colleges in America, yes, I may only be 18-years-old, but I do have a voice, and I intend to be heard. If running for office is what it takes, then that's what I'll do. Nowadays, there are far too many old, stuffy men growing fat in Congress. Men who have lost touch with what it means to be an ordinary American, and who can no longer serve the American people as they should. Men who have nothing better to do than argue over meaningless topics while spewing political hatred for the other side. When it really comes down to it, most Americans lie in between liberals and conservatives and want to see more bipartisanship in America. They don't want to see constant Bush-bashing, just like they don't believe that liberals are the scum of the Earth. That's what I want to stand for. Actually, scratch that. That IS what I stand for. I stand for compromise, bipartisanship, and a more united United States of America. I'm more than willing to work with conservatives if that's what it takes to strengthen our country. I want to move past petty partisan divisions in our country to work together for a better tomorrow. I'm tired of old codgers in Congress. I'm tired of seeing the same issues show up over and over again without any real solutions being made. I'm tired of seeing politicians lie, cheat, and steal to get ahead. In his inaugural address, Jack Kennedy said, "United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do, for we dare not meet a strong challenge at odds and split asunder." Some might call my stance naive and too optimistic. That may be. Or it may be that there truly is a majority of Americans who want to agree with each other, and who want to deal with the challenges facing the country together. I'm for bringing those people together. It's time to whip this country back into shape (metaphorically, not literally). Here's to a successful campaign in a couple of years. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is an 18-year-old college student at Emerson College in Boston.
