Wolfowitz Expected To Finance The Invasion With Oil

By Thomas Keyes
Oct. 23, 2006

Paul Wolfowitz, former Deputy Secretary of Defense and so the Pentagon’s number two man, was probably one of the most brilliant and influential architects of the invasion of Iraq. According to Wikipedia’s article on him, “Wolfowitz is considered by many political analysts a neoconservative and possibly a Straussian known for his passionate pro-Israel advocacy and staunch support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq.” He and his friends, like I. Lewis Libby, Douglas Feith and Richard Perle, had been planning to invade and conquer Iraq for decades, and finally, in 2003, they got their chance.

Years ago, according to the same article, “Wolfowitz hired Kemp and Dennis Ross, a Soviet specialist from the University of California, to work with him on preparing the study. (The study stated,) ‘We and our major industrialized allies have a vital and growing stake in the Persian Gulf region because of our need for Persian Gulf oil and because events in the Persian Gulf affect the Arab-Israeli conflict.’”

My personal belief is that Wolfowitz was really concerned only about the Arab-Israeli conflict, but added the Gulf-oil argument to make the idea of the invasion more acceptable to the general public. Why should he have mentioned the conflict at all?

Either Wolfowitz grossly underestimated the magnitude of the conflict that the invasion would spark, or he just minimized it in order to sell the war, not caring at all how much it would cost.

Apparently, he expected to finance the war by seizing Iraq’s oil and using the proceeds to finance the opponents of Saddam Hussein, who would respond in unison when the US waved its baton. Further along in Wikipedia’s article, we find, “Kampfner outlines Wolfowitz’s strategy for the invasion of Iraq which ‘envisaged the use of air support and the occupation of southern Iraq with ground troops, to install a new government run by Ahmed Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress.’ Wolfowitz believed the operation would require minimal troop deployment because, as Hersh clarifies, ‘any show of force would immediately trigger a revolt against Saddam within Iraq, and that it would quickly expand.’ THE FINANCIAL EXPENDITURE WOULD BE KEPT LOW BECAUSE, AS KAMPFNER EXPLAINS, “UNDER THE PLAN AMERICAN TROOPS WOULD SEIZE THE OIL FIELDS AROUND BASRA, IN THE SOUTH, AND SELL THE OIL TO FINANCE THE OPPOSITION.” (My capitals).

Recently, I posted an article demonstrating the folly of arguing that the invasion of Iraq was all about oil. I merely ran the figures and calculated that the war has cost $140 a barrel for ten years on all oil imported from Iraq.

Now let me make some simplifying assumptions to show how much economic sense it would make for someone like Wolfowitz and his friends, all Jewish Zionists, to undertake the invasion on behalf of Israel. Jews make up 2.5% of the population of the US. Their median income is roughly double that of American Gentiles, so their share of the total economy is 5%. I realize that not all American Jews are Zionists or pro-Israel, but I said I was simplifying to keep it brief. If influential Jews could bend US Middle East policy in the direction they please, the Jewish community would have to bear only 5% of the total cost of the war, whereas if they had financed Israel directly as the invading force, they would have had to pay 100% of the cost of the war. Thus they are leveraging their money at a ratio of 20 to 1. Very good finance indeed! And is there no moral consideration that would prevent Jews’ involving Gentiles in such a plan and having them pay 95% of a war not in their own best interests? Apparently Jewish morality does not disallow this. According to the Talmud, Baba Kamma 37b., “The gentiles are outside the protection of the law and God has ‘exposed their money to Israel.’”
