Oct. 22, 2006 I feel great! I feel wonderful! I’ve never felt better in my life! I know I never have done anything that would entitle me to feel so good, but I sure am glad that I do. I feel like a million dollars, top-notch, first-rate, A-OK! Of course, being back in Buenos Aires is a joy, but I had a splendid time in Paraguay too. I have a choice little room in an old, but intriguing neighborhood, a little south of downtown Buenos Aires, only a few blocks from the banks of El Río de la Plata. Some of the architectural embellishments on these older buildings of six and seven stories around here are very quaint and curious. I live diagonally across from Parque Lezama, where the National History Museum of Argentina stands. Every Sunday there’s an art fair in the park, and it extends along Calle Defensa for a mile or so to the north, towards Plaza Dorrego, where there’s another fair. I usually get up at 5:30 or 6, when it is still difficult to tell whether it will be gray or sunny, but by the time I go through my hour of exercises, take a bath and get dressed, it’s drawing on towards 8 o’clock. This morning at 8, the sun was spilling in in great profusion, a veritable cornucopia of golden rays. It looked so beautiful, I was delighted just to be alive. My room is fresh and spotless, and I keep it that way. I make the bed myself, though there’s maid service too, and I don’t just throw things around, so it’s always neat and inviting. My own habits make for health and happiness—no liquor, no tobacco, no controlled substances, a spare diet, plenty of exercises, lots of sleep, no television, no radio. Just about every day I walk down to the train station at Constitución, about half a mile to the west. There I can get a big, fat grilled sausage sandwich for 60 cents or two slices of pizza for 45 cents. That’s my big meal of the day! Of course, there are elegant restaurants around too, but I’m simply not into all that. First of all, I don’t want to spend any more money than I have to, and secondly, I don’t want to gain any weight. I always watch what I’m eating. There are endless stores downtown, but so far, in this visit, I haven’t been downtown. Perhaps next week, I’ll go down to the Abasto, a huge mall that’s famous in these parts. Harrods Buenos Aires, which is the only branch of the famous store outside of England and which closed in 1998, was supposed to reopen. Perhaps I’ll go down to Calle Florida and see. I really can’t buy anything to speak of, because I will merely have to lug it along with me when I go on to my next port of call, wherever that may be. But it’ll be fun just to wander around downtown just the same. Anyway, I have no aches, no pains, no troubles, no worries. The things that I do do probably would not make sense to anyone else, but I enjoy doing them. I’ve heard of older people, like myself, who don’t know what to do with themselves, but I have no problem with that. Quite the contrary, I wish there were more hours in the day or that I had more energy to make better use of the hours that I do have. Let me close by saying it again: it’s just great to be alive!
