By Patrick Hurley Oct. 20, 2006 Finally some sanity is descending upon our nation's capital... The Washington Post is reporting that there is going to be a MAJOR shift in U.S. policy concerning our involvement in Iraq. Why? Because the Republican candidates for the House and Senate are getting "hammered" by their opponents for backing a failed policy in that country. It is now becoming OBVIOUS to everyone outside of the Oval Office and Dick Cheney's camping tent that we need to make a move out of that godforsaken territory. The question remains: CAN Bush withdraw our troops gracefully and successfully? Hell, NO! Since he already senses that inevitable failure of his short-sighted strategy, look for him to stall as long as possible before he is finally forced by his OWN party to admit he is looking more like Alfred E. Neuman than Abraham Lincoln... Here is a great quote from the Post which supports what I have been saying for the past two weeks much to the consternation of the blinded partisan followers who believe our President is the Second Coming of Wisdom in war strategy; "Senior figures in both parties are coming to the conclusion that the Bush administration will be unable to achieve its goal of a stable democratic Iraq within a, (get this!) politically feasible time frame." Duh, duh and DUH! Shall I translate for you? The Republican Party is beginning to wet its pants in fear that the voters in America HAVE FINALLY FIGURED OUT THE OBVIOUS that our President has no plan for Iraq beyond those first three days of bombing, that Rumsfeld is about as capable as Custer was at that OTHER battle in Montana and that Dick Cheney needs more oxygen before he should EVER be allowed to speak again. The problem here as we consider these major political changes is that there is one entity dumber than the current White House occupant and lurking in its own goofy shadow. That is the Democratic Party. When one begins to think of an alternative to George W. Bush and sees the puffy face of Ted Kennedy or the constantly shifting stances of Hillary Clinton, it is not comforting. Choose your poison. Would you rather ride in a car with Kennedy or go hunting with Cheney? Would you prefer to stand close to Bush chopping wood or let Nancy Pelosi explain her loopy liberal ideas to you by the fireside? It begs the question when you stop and really think about who governs us: How do all these people get ELECTED? Is this the best we can do? We are the greatest country on earth and we have leaders that have the depth and value of a prize in a Crackerjack box. Where have all the real statesmen gone to? Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Adlai Stevenson, Robert F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan...oh, I remember now, they are all dead. They have been replaced by wannabe cowboys, flip flopping war veterans, stumbling, bumbling peanut farmers, sex-addicted intern fondlers and fake Reverends who has never held a real job in his life. Instead of having several classic leaders to choose from we get two guys out of Gentleman's Quarterly who are carefully manufactured and manicured and propped up on a campaign stump every fourth year on Labor Day weekend. This is not truth, it is a travesty. And to our shame, we put up with it because we are lazy in this country. Instead of standing up and fighting for men with vision, inspiration and pragmatic plans that will make our nation more financially stable and its citizens more provided for and protected, we sit on our couches and complain to anyone within earshot that once again we are stuck with two guys who are one step above Lennie and Squiggy. Today our political leaders work less days, pay themselves more money, speak numbly like the partisan robots they are and allow our heroic troops to die in vain in a country that is not ever going to change one degree from what it has always been, a toxic waste dump of ideas and beliefs nestled ironically between the two rivers that once defined the Garden of Eden. I look forward to the Republican party being humbled on election day in three weeks just enough to tell their commander in chief that it is time to finally come up with a policy for withdrawal in Iraq. Because if he doesn't do something soon, we are going to have a SECOND mess on our hands that will sicken me almost as much as the one in Baghdad.... The retaking of Congress by the Democratic Party. If that does not strike fear in the hearts of reasonable people everywhere nothing will. ------------ About the author: ![]() ![]() Pat Hurley has won three Emmy awards for writing, hosting and producing television shows.
