EMT's Should Walk Off The Job And Protest

By Arthur L Burton III

In New York City the Police Department has arrested several EMT's for carrying badges. I think that this is absurd and there is no appreciation for those who were once deemed hero's. The effort in New York City by an EMT is unmeasurable because whether on or off duty when there is an accident you can see them assisting those who are injured.

There is no other way to put this but to say that there is no gratitude in a City that is supposedly built on Justice for all. No EMT has ever been more valuable to the people of New York City than they are right now. Most EMT's volunteer their services in their communities and use their personal time with no pay to help others. If this persists no one will want to be an EMT because they will be discouraged and this is a bad thing. EMT's are those who are responsible for transporting the elderly to and from the nursing homes and to be arrested for carrying a badge that identifies an EMT as an Emergency medical technician just makes no sense.

EMT's are law abiding individuals that sacrifice long hours doing a very difficult job and there needs to be some reward. No one is asking to be above the law but when you stop on the highway to assist an injured person those siren lights that are flashing tells other drivers to be cautious.

If you have ever tried to merge into another lane in New York City using your signal you know that it is very difficult because there is no driver courtesy here. When most drivers see you signalling instead of yeilding they speed up to stop you from getting into the lane. I tried to merge into a lane after an accident to assist and injured person in a crash and no one would let me into the lane to assist the person. I am in no way saying that a person should be allowed to break the law but if there is no law then there is none to be broken.

Every person that holds and EMT Ceritification card does not work as a profession as an EMT because the pay is something like ten dollars and hour and no one can afford to live on that salary. The Major himself needs to step in and show some type of appreciation for a service that is being rendered for no pay. It might sound cruel but why should you jeaprodise your own life to help others if in the clutch no one cares about it. I saw plenty of arguments about the siren lights being used in personal cars of the EMT's but when you are the one hurt and there is no Ambulance for miles and you see the lights of an EMT who is on his way home or to work and he is able to get to you because of those siren lights; I am sure that you will change your mind.

I met a woman in North Shore Hospital on Long Island and she was saying how she had gotten sick and was waiting for assistance and she saw a car coming with the siren lights in the windshield and it was a volunteer ambuance worker and he was able to keep her safe for 30 minutes before the working ambuance personell arrived on the scene.

Heck, I'm an EMT myself for 6 years and I know that I have helped countless people on the highways and in the train stations but since there is no gratitude I am hanging up the gloves. No more paying 450 dollars to take a test to renew an EMT card for no gratitude. This might sound bad but hey where are all the people of New York who were helped during 9-11? They should be looking out for every EMT because 9-11 was the worst disaster that I can remember in New York City. I believe that it is not enough to remember the Twin Towers, you should remember all those people that helped and volunteered to make sure that the people of New York City remained safe.

Plenty of the Volunteer workers, EMT's included that assisted during 9-11 are sick with glass in their lungs and lung cancer because of their willingness to walk blndly into a situation with one thing in mind - that was to help the people injured. They trusted the City of New York to supply them with proper gear so that the would be protected, but we no that those carbon masks that were given out did nothing.
