Nobel Peace Prize And Other Observations

By Craig Chamberlain
Oct. 15, 2006

Muhammad Yunus, and Grameen Bank have won the Nobel Peace prize for 2006. Usually this prize seems to go to any left wing anti American loon the Norwegians can get their hands on, after all Jimmy Carter won it and let's not forget that Yasser Arafat could claim one as well. I wonder when Usama Bin Laden will get one.

But this years Nobel Peace Prize winner seems to be decent enough. Yunus, has pioneered the micro loan. His bank gives very small amounts of money to the poor so they can start their own businesses, many of his clients are women. Bangladesh, a poor, Muslim, country can use all the new businessmen it can get, or in many cases businesswomen.

It's too fashionable in this day and age to think that poverty can be cured with a government program of economic and income redistribution. Instead of letting people work and make money by getting into business we think it is the function of big brother to help people.

Mr. Yunus seems to disagree. He seems to believe that the best way for people to get help is to help themselves. He isn't asking the Begaladeshi government to do it or the international community to pour the money in. He started a business that helps the poor to get into business. Wow. The private sector doing a better job than the public sector. Maybe someone in Washington D.C. should take note.

Ok, onto other things. Has hell frozen over, or have we entered an alternate universe where the sports world is turned on its head? I mean, the Detroit Tigers in the world series? Rutgers Universitry undefeated and in the top 25? WVU ranked in the top five and a serious contender for the national title? What's next, the Arizona Cardinals playing the Houston Texans in the Super Bowl? No wait, the Chicago Bears will probably go 15-1 and win it all. Not that any of this bothers me, WVU fanatic that I am I would be thrilled to see them win the national championship though some to think they're doomed if they go up against the Buckeyes.

Back to more serious matters. North Korea tests a nuclear weapon, and the UN does nothing. Anyone surprised? Even China, who is supposed to be Pyongyang's puppet master, hasn't done anything to reign in the country of deranged Stalinists(Ok, that's redundant, but I think I needed an adjective before Stalinists). Can't we all agree now that the UN is useless and anyone who thinks we should look to the UN for leadership should automatically be disqualified from being elected to anything in the US.

North Korea, and Iran, are problems for the whole world, and they will not go away on their own. We can't cut a deal with them or hope we last two years and let a new administration deal with them. The world wants to appease them, to cave into them in the hopes that it will buy them safety. It won't. North Korea is ruled by a madman, and Iran won't hesitate to unleash its Islamist fury on anyone, even the most disgusting of collaborating countries.

It's ironic that so many countries pride themselves on standing up the US, creating a "counterweight" to us, largely because they know they can get away with their minor annoyances. But they won't stand up to a Stalinist Gulag, or a psychotic, fascistic, theocracy. But they can blast the worlds oldest republic without fear.

Europe is setting on a Islamic timebomb and won't do anything to defuse it, and South Korea and the rest of East Asia just hope North Korea will go away on its own. Talk about not living in reality.

One last thing. The Democrats keep saying that everyone wants a change. Maybe so, I'd like to be rid of my congressman, and Senators, Democrats all. But have they offered any real differences? Any real solutions other than putting their tails firmly between their legs and running as fast as they can? If the Iraq invasion created new terrorists(it didn't. It just brought the scum out of hiding.)Imagine what a retreat would do? Instead of bombing Baghdad they'd be bombing Boston instead. I can't help but feel contempt for any political party that treats defending America as optional work.

If they win in November we'll see how much they are willing to fight.

Until next time.
