Oct. 11, 2006 According to an October 3, 2006 article in The Jewish Daily Forward, two scholars who penned an essay on the influence of the Israel lobby have landed a contract to expand the 83-page essay for publication as a book. http://www.forward.com/articles/scholars-land-a-book-deal-for-attack-on-israel-lob/ The scholars, Stephen Walt of Harvard University and John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago, published their original essay, entitled “The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy”, on March 23, 2006 in the London Review of Books, explaining that they could not find anyone in the US who would accept it for publication. It also appeared on the website of Harvard’s Kennedy School , but, almost immediately, Harvard removed its logogram from the paper. Walt, who had been dean of the Kennedy School, became a mere professor. Though both Harvard and Walt have denied that this was a punitive demotion, one might wonder. Harvard was supposed to have received numerous complaints from the Jewish community, including some of the benefactors of the university. The two scholars contend that a loose coalition of pro-Israel individuals and groups have united symbiotically to skew US foreign policy in the Middle East in favor of Israel even at the expense of America’s best interests. The Israel Lobby, as they call the coalition, does not consist exclusively of powerful Jews, but includes many of their Gentile servitors and sympathizers. They argue that the Israel Lobby fomented or instigated the war in Iraq and longs for war with Iran as well. Their work contains all the facts and figures, and is amply annotated with footnotes citing reputable publications and websites. The appearance of the essay brought a chorus of denunciations down on Mearsheimer and Walt. The New York Sun linked Mearsheimer and Walt to David Duke. Alan Dershowitz responded immediately with a “refutation” linking the scholars to neo-Nazi websites. However, the response of most of the media was merely to ignore it, just as Mearsheimer and Walt had anticipated. The article in The Forward contains these paragraphs: “Many commented on the irony of how a scholarly paper that wore as a badge of pride its purported exclusion from mainstream American media outlets has now been embraced by the most elite of American book publishers. “That the two scholars were shut out from the American mainstream was, according to David Harris, executive director of the American Jewish Committee, ‘a disingenuous claim from the start. It was a way to try and market themselves as victims of the “all-powerful group” they were writing about. It fed into their own conspiratorial notions.’” These paragraphs are utterly false. Every day for at least a month after the appearance of the essay, I entered “ Israel Lobby” in the Yahoo News search box. The number of search results averaged about 140 or 150. I didn’t keep exact figures. Also, most of the search results were from alternative news websites. I saw only very few from major newspapers, and the few that did appear were generally very derogatory. Only one major paper had a halfway impartial review. For comparison, I just typed “Mark Foley” in the Yahoo News search box and got more than 13,000 search results. So what should be a major concern of all loyal Americans, the Israel Lobby, gets only 1% of the attention that the indiscretions of a single US Representative get.
