Does JINSA Run The Department Of Defense?

By Thomas Keyes
Oct. 10, 2006

In her new book, “Soldier: The Life of Colin Powell”, to be published on October 10, 2006, Karen DeYoung, an associate editor of The Washington Post, relates (1) that Colin Powell considered his own address of February 5, 2003 before the UN a “blot” on his record, and (2) that he called Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld’s team “the JINSA crowd.” Here is a relevant article from the New York Daily News:

I haven’t read the book, of course, and I probably won’t, but I was interested in those two excerpts. Let me take them one at a time.

1.) Here are some passages from Powell’s UN speech,

“Indeed, the facts and Iraq's behavior show that Saddam Hussein and his regime are concealing their efforts to produce more weapons of mass destruction....I would call my colleagues attention to the fine paper that United Kingdom distributed yesterday, which describes in exquisite detail Iraqi deception activities….We know from Iraq's past admissions that it has successfully weaponized not only anthrax, but also other biological agents, including botulinum toxin, aflatoxin and ricin.”

There are many other horrifying references to Iraq ’s WMD programs in Powell’s address, which can be read at this URL:

Apparently, Powell considers his speech a “blot” on his record because of the gross exaggerations and arrant lies that it contained. The short article from the Daily News leads one to conclude that Powell was impressed willy-nilly into the service of George W. Bush’s war machine. Notice that, in his speech, Powell refers to the so-called “dodgy dossier”, the British intelligence dossier that contained a plagiarized college thesis written by an American student from California . The dossier had just been released to the press, and would be debunked the day after Powell’s address. But, so far as I know, there has been no recantation until recently.

2.) What is far more significant is that Powell called Rumsfeld’s team, presumably meaning the Department of Defense, the JINSA crowd. JINSA (Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs) is a Washington, DC-based think-tank of tremendous influence in US foreign policy. Below is the URL of their about-page:

JINSA’s advisory board has included, currently or in the past, such influential people as Michael Ledeen, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Richard Cheney and John Bolton, all but the last two of whom are Jewish and have close connections with Israel . These and the other members of JINSA were widely known as shrill proponents of the invasion of Iraq . Michael Ledeen, allegedly involved in the preparation of the Niger forgeries, is also a vehement antagonist of Iran . Douglas Feith was the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and the head of the Office of Special Plans, an organ set up to disseminate pro-war propaganda such as the disinformation offered up by Ahmad Chalabi. Here is Wikipedia’s article on JINSA:

Anyone doubting the influence that Israel exerts on the White House should ponder the meaning of Powell’s remark. Perhaps Powell’s forthcoming book will throw more light on the subject.
