Oct. 9, 2006 Now that the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK aka north Korea) has apparently tested a nuclear device, it is vitally important that America have a foothold in Asia. From 1898 (Spanish-American war) to 1946 the Philippine Islands were a colony then a commonwealth as part of the USA. In 1946, the Philippines decided to become an independent nation, as the US had promised prior to W.W.II and the Japanese occupation. Many in the Philippines (some say the majority of citizens) have since come to regret leaving the United States. If the Philippines were still a territory (or better yet, a state or states) Filipinos would be able to enter the US without a visa. Many talented Filipinos languish in poverty, yet are trained as doctors, teachers, nurses, computer technicians, etc. Many Americans don't realize that most Filipinos speak rather fluent English (it is compulsory in their schools) and are well-educated. With a shortage of high-tech and medical professionals, why would the US deny itself an almost limitless supply of productive English-speaking workers? Admitting the Philippines back into the union as one or several states would also tend to stem illegal immigration, as Filipinos (now Americans) would likely take many of the lower-level jobs that illegals currently hold. The United States needs military and naval bases in Asia to counter the threat from a now nuclear north Korea, and the Philippines fits the bill. Many former US bases in the Philippines still exist and could be reactivated quickly. Kim Jung Il is a dangerous man and must be checked. For the above reasons, and many more, it makes sense to begin talks with the Philippine people about readmitting their country into our union.
