The Runaway Bride's PARENTS!

By Patrick Hurley
Oct. 6, 2006

Interesting news item the other day.

The parents of a 21 year-old girl in Utah are now in jail for second degree felony kidnapping because they misled their daughter into believing she was going on a shopping trip when in reality they were taking her far away from her wedding day ceremony.

Why?

They didn't approve of her upcoming marriage so they physically prevented her from consummating it.

Bummer.

There are parents who disapprove of their child's choice for a partner and then there are parents who DISAPPROVE of their child's choice for a partner. I can only imagine the conversation as they drove from Utah to Colorado, a distance of 240 miles away.

"Uh, mom, wasn't that the mall we passed back there?"

"Why yes sweet girl, it was...."

"Um, daddy did we just leave ...Utah?"

"Uh huh. Sure did."

"Are we going to a new shopping place or something?"

"Yes we are darling daughter, why do you ask?"

"Oh, because I just saw a sign that said, 'Welcome to the Rocky Mountain State,' that's Colorado, right? How long are going to be here? You know I am getting married in four days."

"When pigs FLY!"

As the reality of what was happening began to dawn on the horrified bride to be, I am certain that at some point soon thereafter loud screaming was involved. When she failed to turn up for her rehearsal dinner, her concerned future husband did the right thing. He phoned the police. Soon, it was apparent that his lovely fiance was being prevented by two criminal abductors....

Mom and Dad.

They are now waiting for their first court date on October 26 to face charges of kidnapping. If you think this is bizarre, let me clue you in a little more here. The family are devoted members of the Church of Latter Day Saints. They are Mormons. If you know anything about this religious branch you probably realize they take their vows very seriously, from polygamy to missions. Their main focus is on the family and they do not mess around when it comes to providing for and protecting the ones they love as in Elizabeth Smart. I guess this also extends to NOT taking care of the ones they don't, like Mark Hacking. You want weird? Hang around Utah long enough and you will see things you never dreamed about including parents kidnapping their own daughter so she cannot be at the altar on her big day.

I can just see the wedding announcement now on the society page:

Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Redd of Monticello, Utah announce the engagement of their lovely daughter to be null and void effective immediately! If you don't believe it go ahead and show up at the temple to personally see that we mean exactly what we say. Our daughter is not capable of choosing the right man for her so we, as her loving and obsessive parents, have taken legal matters into our own hands and crossed state lines to protect her from the raving lunatic also known as her fiance. We are truly sorry to many of you who have gone out and purchased toasters. Our child is delusional and does not really love this moron and we need a little more time to help convince her of it. We are her parents and we are right about this. We have always been right about what is good for her. Have a nice day and the visiting hours for our new home will be from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends only.

Kind of gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "tough love," huh?
