Oct. 4, 2006 When anyone criticizes a black person, it is quite common to see the race card played. A substantive criticism is deflected by pointing out that the criticizer is white and the criticizee is black, and thus the criticism, it is claimed, must be racially based, a result of bigotry: Oh Lawdee, massa done been whippin' dat poor OJ Simpson because he be black! Eeeevill Simon Legree and his cronies, otherwise known as conservatives, are picking on poor Mr. Jefferson because he's a black congressman, not because he has $90,000 in graft monies hidden in his freezer. And now we have Mark Foley, caught red-handed--or more likely, hands covered with K-Y Jelly--with naughty e-mails to underage boys who worked as pages for congressmen. So far he's tried playing the alcoholism card, but that didn't seem to fly. Then he played the "abused by a priest" card, but that didn't seem to get much sympathy. So now he's played the "golly, I'm a gay man" card. This is supposed to excuse his behavior. Unfortunately, Mr. Foley has forgotten a very important fact: The "gay card" only works for Democrats! It is a double standard, to be sure, but it is a double standard which illustrates a difference between the two parties, a difference which should be lauded and preserved. Democrats will excuse most anything if the perpetrator is a member of a supposedly persecuted minority. If you are black, they will excuse drug dealing, alcoholism, even murder. If you are gay, they will excuse condoning gay prostitution and pedophilia. Just review the Barney Franks and Gerry Studds cases. Republicans might well not make a big deal of being gay, but they won't allow its use to excuse preying on young people. I'm all for this double standard. I don't think Republicans should condone bad behavior because one of theirs is black or gay. To do otherwise would be an insult to all the blacks and gays who don't commit crimes. The Democrat position implicitly ascribes to the view that black people are not to be held to the same standard as others. In other words, the Democratic position is that blacks are inferior and can't be expected to behave decently. Same with the Democratic view of gays. Republicans, on the other hand, think blacks and gays should be--and CAN BE--just as decent and law-abiding as other people. Makes sense to me. ------------ About the author Brooks A.
