Oct. 3, 2006 If the Columbine disaster hadn't taught us the danger of crazed students and strangers in schools, three recent shootings should have done so. On the heels of two school killing sprees, including one in Bailey, Colorado, not far from Columbine, now we see that even a quiet Amish one-room schoolhouse isn't safe! We must immediately begin to arm school principals, vice-principals and trusted teachers. One or two days worth of funding from the Iraq war would arm and train every teacher in the United States. All schools must have armed staff, whether the school is public, parochial or private. Every level, from preschool and day-care to community colleges, trade schools to graduate schools should be covered by this policy. Arming teachers and staff at schools will save many lives. Whether the assailant be a student, stranger, parent or terrorist, only the staff in the classroom and school office are on the scene RIGHT NOW, when and where the attacks take place. Stationing police or armed security guards in schools has not stopped these attacks where used and would be prohibitively expensive to apply nationwide. Teachers and administrative staff are already in place and being paid, arming them would only entail firearms training and issuing weapons. Police and sheriffs departments across the country have hundreds of thousands of confiscated handguns that could be inspected and issued to teachers and staff with minimal cost, if Congress were to pass a law enabling such a program. How many more school massacres do we need to see on television before we take steps to protect our most vulnerable citizens? ------------ About the author: Fred Paxson is a recent Phd. graduate.
