Nov. 26, 2006 After last year’s controversial selection of Dennis Siluk as “UK Columnist of the Year,” I’m assuming this year’s voting method will be different and more concise. Since that day, Mr. Siluk has been given the Frankenstein treatment and run off, leaving torch and pitchfork wielding citizens in his wake. The UK site has lost several fine writers, including Judy Ramsook, last year’s runner-up to Mr. Siluk. The site has since gone through a revamping and rebuttals are usually left to the forum, rather than the front page sport it had been—with a few notable exceptions. The one feature that stands out about UK is the fine caliber of writing. From Michael John McCrae, Fred Smith, Tom Pain, Claxton Graham, Meri Ulrich, Thomas Keyes, Jack Lepiarz…obviously I could go on, but you see my point; this is a news analysis site steeped in finely written opinion. This is why the Columnist of the Year is going to be a tough decision. But my choice was easy: I first boiled it down to five individuals—Michael John McCrae (he will stick to his guns and his tenure has been nothing less than stellar); Fred Smith (whom I don’t think submits nearly enough); Claxton Graham (a man whose style I admire); Tom Pain (who though controversial, is prolific and always offers some food for thought) and “the Kid”(LOL)--Jack Lepiarz. I opted for Jack Lepiarz. For starters not only is he astute and his opinions well thought-out, but he has somehow managed to avoid being bashed by those with an ax to grind—and at UK that number is easily in double figures. Two, his rebuttals are always tactful. I think the old guard has started to see past the fact that he is so young; that the guy is simply talented. So there you have it, my choice for UK Columnist of the Year. I’m sure that’s a selection everyone can live with, someone who is nothing more than deserving of our consideration. ------------ About the author: Timothy N.
