Can We "Make Room For Daddy"?

By Michael John McCrae
Nov. 25, 2006

This column has nothing to do with the old Danny Thomas sitcom.

This column has everything to do with today’s AP report entitled: “Almost 40% of Children Born in the U.S. in 2005 Were Out of Wedlock, an All-Time High” Tuesday, November 21, 2006, which begins: “Out-of-wedlock births in the United States have climbed to an all-time high, accounting for nearly four in 10 babies born last year, government health officials said Tuesday.”

On October 11th of this year I wrote a column entitled “Where’s Daddy?” after seeing a report about illegitimate birth rates among American minorities.

Only a few days later (Oct 16th) I was prompted to write: “Who’s Daddy” after seeing a companion report about how the shape of the American family has become so out-of-shape and how marriage is becoming passé in America .

Now these new percentages hit the fan.

From the article: “While out-of-wedlock births have long been associated with teen mothers, the teen birth rate actually dropped last year to the lowest level on record. Instead, births among unwed mothers rose most dramatically among women in their 20s. The overall rise reflects the burgeoning number of people who are putting off marriage or living together without getting married.”

Living in sin is “in”!

Quote: “The increase in births to unwed mothers was seen in all racial groups, but rose most sharply among Hispanics. It was up among all age groups except youngsters ages 10 to 17.”

Thank goodness 10-year-old girls have seen the light! Of course this could also be due to the ready availability of condoms in middle and high schools across the nation!

From the article: “The government also reported that the rate of births by Caesarean delivery continued to climb in 2005 to a record high, despite efforts by public health authorities to bring down the number. Many experts believe a large number of C-sections are medically unnecessary and done only for the convenience of the mother or her doctor.”

Convenience gets us unmarried “mothers”. Convenience gets us men who don’t care to take responsibility for the children they produce. Convenience is for the doctors who don’t care to stand around waiting for 30 hours of laborious delivery (time is money) and for girls who can’t take the pain of natural childbirth. Yeah! That’s right! It’s all in the name of “convenience”.

More: “About 4.1 million babies were born in the United States last year, up slightly from 2004. More than 1.5 million of those were to unmarried women; that is about 37 percent of the total. In 2004, about 36 percent of births were out of wedlock. Out-of-wedlock births have been rising since the late 1990s.”

Since the days when “sex” wasn’t sex and the term “is” needed definition. From the days if interns on their knee-pads with dresses soaking up the juices of Presidential lust; out-of-wedlock births have been proliferating. There is no room for Daddy anymore.

But the article tells us: “But just because a mother is not married does not mean the father isn't around…2002 statistics showed that about 20 percent of all new mothers under 20 were unmarried but living with the father at the time of the birth. That same was true of about 13 percent of all new mothers ages 20 to 24.”

Which begs the question: “What of the other 80 and 87 percent? Those “dads” were nowhere to be found! 20 and 13 percent is nothing to be either proud of or excited about. Even those low percentages of men that stuck around, stayed unmarried; leaving the children illegitimate! Where is the responsibility?

America is looking more like Europe every day. Men can make babies; women will have babies and babies will grow up with one parent or maybe get lucky to be in the 13 percentile, but whose name does the baby get?
