In All Things Give Thanks

By Skip Toomaloo

For this is the will of God concerning you.

Is it so difficult to thank God for the blessings he bestows on us every day?

We awaken to each day after an evening’s sleep and our first thought should be toward God. His first thought is ever toward us. He saved us because of his unwillingness to see us perish. He comforts and guides us into all truth. He protects us from the ravages of sin.

Everything we own and everything we are evolved from God’s grace and blessing toward us. We deserved nothing because we asked for nothing. Everything that is part of our faith was given without merit to us. We are saved by grace through faith and that not of ourselves because even our faith is a gift, not of works lest we might be boastful of that.

So if God be for us there is nothing that can be against us.

Certainly that is something to be thankful for.

Why men are afraid to render God that which is due to him is a wonder. God never intended men to fear him. If there is fear it is generated from men. Men fear what they do not know. Those of us who know God have no need to fear because we understand what God had done to us and for us.

I understand those who equate God with men. Many believe God is just like any man; capable of deceit an lies, injustice and hatred, murder and envy.

Even God calls himself “jealous” because men make the grim error in believing there are other gods or they make materialism a god to replace what they know to be true. Since God is the creator of all life he should be the sole beneficiary of any expressed love or worship. It amazes me sometimes what other things men find to worship.

God permits men their folly. God permits men their various beliefs and misdirected ideas of faith and fortune. He does not differentiate between unbelieving men. If a man is an unbeliever it doesn’t matter what race, ethnicity, or gender; all unbelievers are sinners and will die in sin.

Too, God does not differentiate between believers. The Apostle wrote that you could be a Gentile, a barbarian, a Scythian, a slave, a master or whatever; if you were in Christ you were the equal to all others in Christ. This is something else to be thankful for. God does not rank the individual. One is either “in Christ” or not.

It is men who honor rank and caste and birthright and royalty. Jesus was just a carpenter; the son of another carpenter. Who was he to come into the hierarchy of the Hebrews and dare to tell taught Pharisees they were misleading the people? How dare this upstart young man speak against 400 years of rabbinical exegesis; pretending he knew God and that God was his Father? He was just a carpenter’s son.

The pride-induced blindness of the Pharisees did not permit them to see the glory of the son of God until he’d already risen from the tomb they’d placed him in. He had come unto his own and his own did not receive him.

Rejection comes easy to a blind man. If I cannot “see” it I cannot believe it. It is sad.

For those of us that had eyes to see and ears to hear we have found the grace of God to be our salvation and our spiritual eternity. There is no fear; only a spirit of thanksgiving. Hopefully we can pass this knowledge to another generation. God is longsuffering. That is something else to be thankful for.

The longsuffering of the true God means that more souls will join the Body of Christ. Fewer souls will be lost to the darkness and despair of sin.

Remember your first love this holiday season my dear Christian friends. Remember the Lord Jesus.
