Nov. 22, 2006 Whether so called realists want to admit it or not the war in the middle east is between two visions. The vision of modern forward looking democracy, or mindless dictatorship. The region can change or it can cling to the status quo, we can help the change or bless the status quo. The Assassination of Pierre Gemayel is another shot in that war, another sign of what is at stake. Gemayel, a true Democrat in a country where democracy isn't too strong, was killed by Syria. That's what fascist dictatorships do to politicians who are outspoken critics of their repressive reigns. Gemayel was outspoken. He believed that Lebanon should be free of Syria. Not an opinion that is greeted with enthusasim in Damascus. Syria views Lebanon as part of greated Syria, a fiefdom under the reign of Damascus. If they can not rule the country directly, with their army in the country, they will try to rule with puppet politicians like the Lebanese president, who is little more than a lickspittle for the Damascus thugs, and their Hezbollah employees. Of course to go to the source of all of this one must go to Tehran. They work together with Syria to try to control Lebanon. Syria gets control of the territory, Iran uses Hezbollah to maintain their interests, and both want to wage total war on Israel. So it's an arrangement they can live with. The Mullahs have been waging war against Israel, and the U.S., since 1979. We've never payed them any attention and have listened to too many life long diplomats and realists who say that if we open a dialouge with Tehran we can reach a deal and find a partner in peace for the region. That is the empty headed thinking that will widen the war and put the middle east under the reign of theocrats who look to the 8th century as the greatest time in human history. Iran funds Shiite militias, hoping they can weaken the country to the point where it is under Tehrans sphere of influence. Iran funds Hezbollah, and along with Syria are trying to have the worlds most dangerous terrorist group take over Lebanon. Hezbollah could never win power democratically, so the situation has to be worsened to the point where people are willing to let the fox in the henhouse if it means some peace and quiet. That kind of peace and quiet usually mean the hens are getting killed. (only the Palestinians, a culture so thouroughly infected by terror are happy with Hamas at the helm. Oh, and Iran has pretty much taken them over as well. This means that Israel is about to be surrounded by Iranian puppets, and the only real democracy in the region will be hanging by a thread.) Instead of taking out the linchpin of the terror network we try to work with them. Hoping that they will give us a few years of peace in Iraq so we can put it behind us in time for the next election. Yes, what a brilliant idea. Let's create the freest democracy in the arab world and then turn the asylum over the patients. Let's let the theocratic nazis next door have an even bigger role in the region. The only way there will be peace is when we have more democracy, not less. We can't make a deal with the devil, because when you make a deal you get burned. Iran might give us a few years of quiet, then they'll roar like never before. With nuclear weapons at their disposal they'll be nearly impossible to deal with. Let's have something to be thankful for, let's keep the Iranians from taking over the region. Let's keep them from making terrorism far worse than it is and let's keep them from unleashing that terrorism on us. That is what the war against the terrorists is about, isn't it? ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
