A Draft?

By Argile Stox
Nov. 20, 2006

Draft, what is this I hear coming from the lips of a Democratic Congressman on CNN? Huh? I almost fell off my chair. The Military Brass is against it and the country does not want to revert back to the nineteen seventies. If we do not have enough fighting men and women – let’s get the heck out of Iraq and Afghanistan, now!

I remember my older friends huddled around the television set waiting to see if their birthday was announced during the Viet Nam conflict. The fear in the room was unbearable. Presently, the Military Brass has been quoted as saying that, if there was a Draft, it would demoralize the rank and file all volunteer army. This is a true statement. It would be a complete mistake to mix volunteers with conscripted troops. The men and women who are now in Iraq, Afghanistan, guarding the boarder between North and South Korea, etc – want to be there. What this country does not need are a bunch of malcontents to disrupt the morale of our brave fighting men and women.

Let’s look back into history. In WW1, a wealthy family could keep their son out of the army by paying a small fee. WW11 was different. Patriotism was overflowing its banks. Korea was still riding the crest of the wave created by the U.S. defeating Japan and Germany . Vietnam was a disaster. Entire families were moving to Canada , colleges were over flowing with applicants who wanted a student deferment. What this country does not need is a repeat of the unrest in colleges, demonstrations in the streets, and the National Guard killing students on college campuses. The list goes on and on.

What astounded me was that a Democrat has revived his call for a Draft! Word on the street is that the armed forces can not afford to train, clothe, feed, and house additional troops. Plus the fact, that our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, is very un-popular. President Bush is on the fence whether he is going to increase or decrease the amount of troops in those countries. The young men and women who, as we speak, who are volunteering for service are replacing the troops whose enlistments (contracts) are up and are going home – and replacing those troops who have lost their lives.

Hey Democrats – think before opening your mouths! In January, you will be in control of the House and Senate. Once you are settled and have been briefed on the wars – then and only then, can you open your mouths and say constructive statements. You do not want to shoot yourself in the foot before you take the oath of office. The topic of conversations around the water cooler, lunches, and dinners is going to be the issue of the Draft. This fire must be put out immediately! If it is not contained right now, the rumor mill will be working overtime to extrude misinformation. Someone from the Democratic Party must go before the television cameras and microphones and dispel the Draft issue. If you wait too long, people will begin to distrust anything that the Democrats say now and in the future.

Get a grip, Democrats! The American people are looking at the Democratic Party to make things right and get us out of the wars we are now involved in. Social programs are starving to be funded. The No Child Left Behind Act needs to be funded or repealed. There are a host of other problems that need to be addressed. I hear-tell that the Democratic Party plans to completely restructure the nation in its first one hundred hours. How are you going to do that? One Hundred Hours is a short period of time. Have you forgotten that President Bush is still in office and can Veto every bill you pass. If you have enough votes to override his Veto – then, that is a different story. However, if the Democratic Party plans to bury President Bush in paper, you will be in for a huge surprise when he Veto’s most of your efforts.

Get a heavyweight from the Democratic Party to allay the fears of the American people concerning the Draft by going on Television, Radio, and Sunday talk shows and reassure the population that their son’s will not be receiving the “Greetings and Salutations” letter in their mailbox. In addition, the heavyweight must plead to the American people to put pressure on President Bush to sign the Bills that will be landing on his desk in the first one hundred hours of the House and Senate session.
