Retain

‘ What was it like then?’

‘ People always wanted to know what you were up to.’

‘ Oh.’

‘ In the schools, it was different. You feared your teachers. You know, I’ve often thought, a child can’t learn that way, in fear.’

‘ It would be harder to learn things that way.’

‘ And you know, if you had something, any little thing, say a new eraser you’d gotten, someone would try and take it. And if the parents were told, it was too late, because they’d say their kid already had that eraser, that it was theirs. What could you do then? Aren’t people petty? And over such a small thing. But you see, to a kid, sometimes they don’t care, they see you’ve got something they want, and that’s it.’

‘ People are often petty.’

‘ The grownups weren’t much different. If they saw you got something extra, some food, or some wine, or something, they’d show up at your door. They’d say they were short, and you wouldn’t mind, would you? And what could you say about it? Some people weren’t shy, you know.’

‘ It was a better time though?’

‘ I don’t know. Different. There was the war. War is a terrible thing. They are still fighting wars today I see. I think it’s a shame.’

‘ The wars today?’

‘ All wars. Because there is just suffering. People can’t get along.’

‘ Do you still say your rosary?’

‘ Every day. I always have. You know, another thing, people aren’t supposed to smoke anymore. I stopped years ago. I never thought I would stop. I cut down to three cigarettes a day. Then I quit. Then the doctor kept saying when I saw him, because it was in his notes, “ So, you are still smoking three cigarettes a day…” I would tell him that I wasn’t, but every time, he kept saying that. So finally, after about two years of that, I got fed up, and just said I was still smoking, even though I wasn’t.’

‘ You can’t smoke anywhere anymore.’

‘ I know. Isn’t that a shame? I don’t agree with that.’

‘ Did you ever have any animals?’

‘ We had a dog once. A long, long time ago.’

‘ I used to come here, but of course you didn’t have a dog here, not then.’

‘ You used to come here, yes. During school. If you were sick.’

‘ I wasn’t sick. I just didn’t like school. I didn’t like anything about it.’

‘ Well the teachers, they were too strict, a child can’t learn that way.’

‘ They weren’t too strict then. I just didn’t like it. I didn’t want to be there. But I still didn’t like the teachers. They said I was fooling around. I wasn’t really fooling around. I don’t know what it was all about. I liked coming here though.’

‘ I was always happy to have you. Schools scare children. A child can’t learn if they are frightened.’

‘ I never wanted to learn anything they were teaching, right up until the end. I never liked any of em’, I liked going home afterwards, and to sleep. That was a good part.’

‘ Do you want anything? Are you hungry?’

‘ No. I have got to go. I’ll talk to you next time.’

‘ Thanks for visiting.’

‘ No problem. Take care, and I’ll see you the next time.’

‘ Okay then.’

‘ Okay. Goodbye.’

‘ Goodbye.’
