Nov. 14, 2006 In 1994, a Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires by the name of ‘Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina’ (AMIA) was blown up by a truck full of ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound used in fertilizers and improvised explosive devices. The seven-story building housing AMIA was leveled, and 85 people, including Jews and others, were killed. This explosion followed the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, a city with a Jewish population of about 200,000. The AMIA bombing took place during the presidency of Carlos Menem. Argentina’s current president is Nestor Kirchner. Pursuant to an 800-page report by prosecutors Alberto Nisman and Alberto Burgos, on October 25, 2006, Argentina formally accused Iran of masterminding the plot, and issued arrest warrants for Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and six other Iranians, as well as a warrant for one Hezbollah operative. This case has been festering for several years, amid charges of bribery and corruption. However, according to a source I will name, George W. Bush has been pressuring Kirchner to mount charges against Iran, so that he can present them to Russia and China in hopes of getting them to agree to sanctions against Iran. Anyone who doubts that Israel is uppermost in Bush’s mind as he confronts Iran on the nuclear issue, should carefully read the following article, which I have cited twice before: http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/newscontent.php3?artid=12350 So the question immediately arises whether Bush sincerely believes that Iran was behind the AMIA bombing, or whether he doesn’t care about guilt or innocence, but seeks only to build an ostensible justification for his anti-Iranian stance. The motive ascribed to Iran for its supposed attack was that the bombing was meant to avenge the termination of an Argentine-Iranian agreement whereby Argentina supplied enriched uranium and other nuclear technology to Iran. Under pressure from the US, the deal was theoretically abrogated, but the Nisman-Burgos report makes it clear than Argentina and Iran continued their cooperation, albeit on a smaller scale, after the abrogation. So it would not have made sense for Iran to seek vengeance and destroy the vestige of cooperation that remained. I’ve known about this bombing for some time, and on the web, you can find any number of websites that accuse the Mossad (HaMossad leModi’in uleTafkidim Meyuhadim), Israeli intelligence, of a false-flag operation. I surely don’t put Israel above terrorist acts and false-flag operations, given its history, but these acts seldom involve the death of fellow Jews. So I merely dismissed such accusations out of hand, especially in the utter absence of checkable evidence. Nor do I put Iran above acts of terrorism. But that consideration in itself does not prove that Iran was guilty in this case. The case against Rafsanjani and his co-defendants is based almost exclusively on the evidence of an Iranian defector named Abdolghassem Mesbahi. Does defector information ring bells? At one time, Abdolghassem Mesbahi accused Argentine president Carlos Menem of accepting a bribe of US $10,000,000 to connive at Iran’s role in the bombing, but later Mesbahi reversed himself and Menem was cleared of this charge. How good then is the rest of Mesbahi’s information? The only other evidence against Iran amounts to an assortment of generalities about its proclivity for terrorism. I wouldn’t take any pronouncment made by Menem or Kirchner at face value. Nor would I take an utterance of Rafsanjani or Ahmadinejad at face value. Unfortunately, I don’t have any more respect than that for the assertions of William F. Clinton or George W. Bush either. Six of a kind!
