Nov. 14, 2006 Thinking about the outcome of the US congressional and the senate elections, after looking at things in retrospect, I have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a good for the Republicans that they have lost both houses two years before the next presidential elections. Here is why. I sometimes like to indulge in war gaming. I play both board and miniatures games. One of my favorites is called THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN. It is a solo game where the player commanding the RAF during WWII has to hold back the Luftwaffe long enough to cause Hitler to cancel operation Sea lion, the invasion of Great Britain. I have discovered that military strategy sometimes involves taking a deliberate short term loss in order to achieve a long term gain. One of the jobs of the player is to deploy squadrons at places he thinks the Luftwaffe will appear. If the target is important risk must be taken when combating the bombers regarding the fighter escort. If the target is not too important the player can afford to hold off he is not sure of the composition of the raid. The player will be down regarding points but in the long run he will win as he had not taken too much damage and has stopped the most damaging raids. This prompted me to think of the US political situation. The Republicans have lost points with the democrat win in the house and in the senate. The Presidents approval rating is at an all time low. Statistically the republicans are in good shape for the presidential second term as historically they are higher in these areas then previous presidents at this comparative time period of their presidency. The Democrats now have two years of exposure in the media which, although friendly to them, will not be able to cover the inevitable clownish antics this populist party is bound to generate. Bill Clinton is at this very moment getting his picture on the front page posing lovingly with Hillary. Jack Merthier is picked for a leading position and I guess that James Carville is bound to appear somewhere. This is just for starters. What will happen in the next two years is anybody’s guess but you can bet some pretty bizarre things are going to happen giving the talk show hosts valuable ammunition. In the game example squadrons sometimes are called upon to land at the behest of the maintenance guys , who are all powerful. In an all out Luftwaffe assault I have discovered through trial and error that it is a good idea to keep as many RAF squadrons on the ground as possible as there is bound to be a call from maintenance to ground the patrolling squadrons. This usually occurs after the Luftwaffe has made two or more sorties per aircraft which subsequently leaves the aircrew fatigued. My guys are now going up fresh and so, having the advantage, knock of a lot of the Luftwaffe escort fighters. For the next week or so I have a field day as the bombers now have hardly any fighter escort my points going up dramatically day after day.. The same applies to the Democrats who after two years of exposure will be fatigued and ripe to be knocked off by the Republicans. In politics just as in the military the party under attack has the advantage as all it has to do is to hold on to win.
