Nov. 14, 2006 “For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, says the LORD of hosts.” Malachi 1:11 The Prophet Zechariah speaks of a time when: “The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name. (14:9) I believe Malachi and Zechariah had glimpsed the same future. They saw the time the Messiah would return to earth after his initial rejection. They saw that the Son of God would come to establish his rule over the whole of the earth. Not only would the Jew rejoice in his final recovery and blessing, but in “every place” God’s name would “be great among the heathen. We know that this earthly reign of the Lord will only be for the relative short period of one-thousand years. I say “short” because compared to eternity, one-thousand years is nothing but a moment. The words of Malachi have never found fulfillment among the generations of man. Yet, knowing Malachi to be a true Prophet of God we understand that there will be that day God’s name will be considered “great among the Gentiles”. This is probably a very difficult thought for many in this present generation. We have lost sight of the statement of Jesus when he explained his coming as that of a “thief in the night”. Many live as though they have thousands of tomorrows to repent and make amends to those they have wronged. Spiritually, that is a reckless attitude. Malachi is the last prophecy of the Old Testament writings contained in the Hebrew/Christian Bible. There was a dearth of 400 or so years from the time of Malachi until the time Jesus took over the ministry of John the Baptist. Within that 400 year period many men took it upon themselves to rewrite the rules and laws of God. Jesus had to remind those who listened to his words: “Think not that I have come to destroy the law or the Prophets. I have not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” The Pharisees saw this to be true. The son of the carpenter knew the Law of Moses. He did not need to rely on the embellishments of the Parasitical Rabbis or the lawyers. It has been 2000 years or so since the killing of the Lord and his resurrection. We understand that by his resurrection, witnessed by many and accounted in written testimony of the eyewitnesses, that upon his return, it will not be a time for more words. It will be a time to finalize the battle between right and wrong, good and evil. What will emit from the mouth of the Lord will be a fire that will destroy and purify the current world in a way that will permit the establishment of his 1000 year reign on the earth. If you bother to read the Prophet Zechariah’s words of the 14th Chapter of his prophecy you will understand that the 1000 years of rule from Jerusalem will not be all peace and joy and love. Requirements will still be issued to the nations that fought against the Jew and the saved Gentile. These requirements will not be a matter of debate or compromise. They will be responsibilities placed by God on men to maintain their peace, safety and personal relationship. There will be consequences for failure to abide by the Lord’s requirements. It seems harsh. But, so then does the crucifixion of an innocent man. Harsh too seems the martyrdom and beheading of God’s faithful. I became sad this morning when I read an article about the Church of England and how they will be permitting the deaths of babies born severely ill, even to the direct killing of these children. I saw a news report today about how America’s atheists are rejoicing that the Democrat Party is now again in power and I had to wonder why? I heard many things about morality and values from Democrats during the various campaigns and these issues are not on the table of atheists normally. Looking back over the history of Democrats in America there is no mystery anymore to the rejoicing of atheists. I take heart in the fact that Malachi saw the future. It is a future with the Lord in complete control. It is a future of peace and safety; the first 1000 years of which will be lived upon this present world.
