![]() By Argile Stox Nov. 13, 2006 The population of The United States has responded to George W. Bush’s promises, the War in Iraq, the economy in the recent House of Representative’s and Senate elections with a resounding rejection of him and his administration. I thought that this country had lost its mind when he was re-elected. However, I now understand why; for the citizens of this country figured that the President had to finish what he started in Iraq. When that did not happen and the loss of life of our brave fighting men & women kept rising and a democratically elected government of Iraq was ineffective regarding the insurgents, something had to change. The population shoved a size thirteen shoe up the Republican’s butt and kicked them out of the Majority of the House and the Senate. Once again, history is repeating itself. For those who are amateur history buffs, they will tell you that this country has reverted back to the mentality of the late nineteen thirties. At the time, the country was in a deep depression and President Hoover had no clue as to how to get America back on its feet. Hoover , a Republican, was at odds with the Majority of Democrats in the House & Senate. Sound familiar? A second world war was looming on the horizon and the population was completely fed-up with the Republican Party. Veterans were setting up tents on the Great Lawn ( Hoover Town ) waiting for benefits, and the middle class had imploded when the Stock Market crashed. Our Nation was on its knee’s. Then along came F.D.R. a Democrat, who reached out to the people. He created the WPA and employed able bodied individuals to work on the infrastructure of our country. The “New Deal” was passed (at a cost of about thirty two billion dollars a year) and Social Security was invented. The list goes on and on. At the time of this writing, our country is at war with religious zealots in the Middle East . Iraq and Afghanistan are dealing with an experiment. It is called Democracy. Our own Founding Fathers knew that Democracy was an ever evolving experiment. The key to this experiment was education. Hence, Benjamin Franklin invented Public Schools to bring literacy and knowledge to the people, without the weight of religion to bog it down. The problem that is facing both Middle East countries is that the education the population is now receiving is intertwined with religion. In addition, the Majority of the religious schools are teaching the young students to “hate” America . The Insurgents feed on this concept and induct these brain-washed students into their fragmented cause. With promises of money to their families, supplied by Iran , and virgins when they are dead, the young people of both countries long to be martyr’s, and bring economic relief to their families. Kill an American, then get killed, and your family and the “cause” will prosper. The majority of the populations of Iraq and Afghanistan long for peace and tranquility. However, with an unyielding unemployment rate, the lure of sacrificing a member of the family for economic relief is an overwhelming temptation. What President Bush failed to recognize is that a country like the United States can not jam Democracy down foreign civilian throats. Bush had this manic dream that the population of both countries would be overjoyed with the destruction of the Taliban and an insane dictator, and welcome the Americans with open arms. It is beyond my comprehension, that Bush was not briefed about War Lords, infighting among religious sects, and etc. Faulty intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction – my butt! 9-11 was President Bush’s Pearl Harbor . The country was sliding into a deep recession and unemployment was on the rise. President Bush figured that 9-11 would yield the same consensus and patriotism among the population as the attack on Pearl Harbor did in nineteen forty-one. What he failed to recognize, is that there was a clearly defined enemy, a country that attacked the USA. 9-11 was carried out by a loose band of idiots, who received their training in Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries. The enemy was not and is still not well defined. So, to take the minds of the population off the problems with the economy, Bush thought a war would be the answer. Heck, it worked for F.D.R. It should work again, now. As with Hoover, the country elected a Majority of Democrats in the House and Senate. In that same vein, I can almost guarantee that a Democratic President will be elected in 2008. Bush has two more years left in his term as President. If the war in Iraq and Afghanistan is still dragging on, and the government in Iraq fails to implement change and capture – kill the insurgents and their leaders, and our brave military are still losing their lives; President Bush and the Republican Party are going to be H-I-S-T-O-R-Y! The Party will be O-V-E-R! On the other side of the coin, when the Democrats are finally seated in the House and Senate, and they get our country out of the war and bring our troops home – President Bush and the Republican Party are still going to be H-I-S-T-O-R-Y! The Party will still be O-V-E-R! Look at it this way – if Watergate had never happened, Nixon would have been enshrined as a hero for getting our country out of Viet Nam . The Democrats got us fully involved in Viet Nam , and it took a Republican to get us out. Now, the reverse is going to occur. A Republican got us involved in a war and it will take the Democrats to get us out! Actually, it was President Eisenhower, a Republican – who first sent military observers to Viet Nam . It is a metaphysical question that will never be answered, what President Kennedy would have done in Viet Nam . Would he have pulled the troops out or kept them in? Want to start a real family fight during the holidays? Bring that question up at the dinner table. At the time of this writing, President Bush is now referred to as a “Lame Duck.” The truth is the entire Republican Party is L-A-M-E! Word on the Hill, is that many Republican’s who were not re-elected, are going to switch parties and become Democrats or Independents. I have a feeling that the Republican Party is going to go the way of the “Wig” Party. The Wig Party, who were they? Dust off your High School history books. Maybe ask your children who are studying American History in Elementary and High School who the Wig Party was and what political party replaced them? Wow! It will be a blessing if this article drives even one person, maybe two, to reacquaint themselves with American History and the evolution of our political system.
