Republicans Should Get Over It--Here's Why

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Nov. 10, 2006

Let me get right to the point: In Washington, it will be business as usual. Who cares if the Democrats are “in power”? The key issue in this election seemed to be the American voters responding to the war on Iraq--which most believe was unnecessary. Truth of the matter is, American’s foreign policy has already been set and no ganging up of Democrats or anyone else is going to bring our soldiers home any time soon. Iraq is a quagmire we will be policing and “consulting on” for another decade. Thank you PNAC!

For me, the real issues were local. I already had a feeling there were going to be sweeping changes in the halls of Congress. Isn’t that what the media said and wanted? Moreover, I figured it was a matter of time before Rumsfeld left, and I predict that within months Cheney will also leave, “for reasons of health.” I still don’t think that will thwart the Bush agenda. This is one President who is Texas stubborn and he’s not going anywhere without a fight. If Pelosi is foolish enough to start one, she’ll be biting off more than she can chew and voters will see her move as nothing more than an attempt at "payback."

As for the not-so-golden state of California: Schwarzenegger was a shoe-in, for as usual, the Dems nominated the duller of two evils, Angelides over Westley. Angelides is what I use to hear old folks call “a professional politician.” He’s always in the mix, but you’re never quite sure what he’s doing or has done. He also has a lax attitude regarding environmental issues, points raised by both Westley and Schwarzenegger. “Phil-or-bust-or…” failed to rebut those claims; moreover, no one knew what he was for or against. He was also labeled as a threat to raise taxes, a charge he never disputed. His was as incompetent a campaign as I’ve ever seen. Where’s Gary Coleman when you need him?

The real issues for me were state propositions designed to rebuild our local infrastructure (one such proposal requested funding for boring a new hole in the Caldecott Tunnel, that connects Contra Costa and Alameda counties).

There were also propositions asking for increases in transportation funding, a port security bond, expanding financing for homeless shelters, and a disaster preparedness bond. All of these measures passed.

Tax increases on cigarettes and on oil companies (under the guise of funding health and alternative energy programs) were defeated. In my county, a law to manage urban growth via establishment of an urban line limit passed 63% to 37%. The bill was opposed by developers, particularly those in the rapidly growing East county. This means large scale expansion of a city's limit, beyond 30 acres, has to be approved by voters.

I'm sure most of you found your local races more compelling and surprising than the national results. So rest easy, Conservatives. G-Dub is still large and in-charge, unless he is impeached, which I don’t see happening, even though his “readjustment of reality” regarding Iraq pales in comparison to Clinton’s lie about what amounted to a booty call.
