By Patrick Hurley Nov. 9, 2006 Even though I am happy that President Bush finally got his knuckles rapped for being out of line in Iraq, that does not mean I am excited about the new party in power. Make no mistake about it, the next two years are going to be the blind leading the blind in Washington, D.C. Not since Jimmy Carter fumbled his way around the Oval Office will we see such ignorance in action. Give a liberal a house to paint and they will blow it up. Give them a country to run and they will guarantee a big Republican victory in 2008. Trust me. It is their nature. History bears this out. In 1964, Lyndon Johnson was given one of the largest mandates of any President in history when he obliterated Barry Goldwater. Four years later, he was a broken man slumping over his desk as he uttered the famous words, "I shall not seek and I will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your President." Finito. Done. Stick a fork in him and his party. That November, Richard Nixon and the Republicans won the Presidency back. They did it again in 1972 and would have have kept right on going if Nixon had not organized a goon force whose activities included trying to bug an office complex called the Watergate on June 17, 1972. In 1976, after President Ford ran for the Presidency on his own after pardoning Nixon, the Democrats turned to a little known governor from the state of Georgia as their candidate. Jimmy Carter was poised to become a two-term President. He was intelligent, charismatic, charming, a southern gentleman and a complete disaster to big-time politics. It wasn't long before Americans caught on to his ineffectual ways. Long gas lines, inflation and a wimpy approach to the taking of our hostages in Iran set the stage for his butt-kicking in the election of 1980. His conqueror? The honorable Ronald Reagan. Give the Democrats a chance and they cannot even last beyond one term. Only Bill Clinton has accomplished that feat since FDR led our nation out of the Great Depression. Since 1948, only ONE Democrat has served as President for more than one term. (There is a caveat here, President Kennedy would have beaten Goldwater had he lived, but the point is still taken when you look at the names who have served as Democratic leaders in the last forty years) In fact, it is EASIER to list the responsible and respectful individuals because the list is much shorter and condensed for quality: Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene McCarthy....uh.... Now, we have Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton. This is our new LEADERSHIP? Excuse me while I invest in barf bag stocks. The next two years of congressional leadership are going to resemble the marching band in, "Animal House" when they blindly followed Stork into a dead end alley during the Homecoming parade. By the time this threesome gets done with America, the Republicans could nominate ME for President and probably win. I wanted us out of Iraq. I was sick and tired of George Bush telling me and my countrymen that we need to, "stay the course," and, "not cut and run," so we could defeat the enemy. He had NO clue how to defeat the enemy and neither does Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld or the new Iraqi government. So, if the Democrats can come up with a withdrawal plan pretty quickly and get our troops home, I will be thankful to them forever. After that, I will be standing on the Capitol steps with duct tape to make sure they don't say or do anything else until we take control of the House and Senate again. The next two years sure will be interesting when you consider the animal that will be the leading us... ------------ About the author: ![]() ![]() Pat Hurley has won three Emmy awards for writing, hosting and producing television shows.
