Nov. 8, 2006 Basically, I don’t care which party controls Congress, or at least I haven’t cared until now. I personally liked Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Clinton. It’s just George W. Bush that I can’t stand. Maybe it’s Internet that has perked up my interest in political affairs. I was always skeptical of printed newspapers and magazines. There were no alternative news sources. But if having a new party in power in Congress offers a slight hope of bringing Bush’s regime down in the ignominy that it deserves, I’m for that new party. My only fear is that the new party won’t do much either. They’ve proven themselves just as inane and sycophantic as Bush’s own party, at least on the only issue I care about, which is the war in Iraq. Little do I care about the employment index, the fluctuating dollar, global warming, homosexuality, abortion and all the other minutiae that people try to make a bid deal of, hoping to obscure the real issue: Why is the US government sacrificing so much money and blood for no other apparent reason than the well-being of Israel. That there has not been a second 9/11 in the five years since the first does not prove that, with the misbegotten invasion in Iraq, George W. Bush has put an end to terrorism. There was no 9/11 for the 230 years prior to Bush either. His administration may well have been the straw that broke the camel’s back and made the camel drivers take to airplanes in the first place. So he really has nothing to pat himself on the back for. At least that’s the way I see it, and, apparently, hopefully, my view of the invasion is becoming the dominant one in the US. I’ve held the same view of the war since before it began, so I’m not changing. It’s the majority that is shifting in the direction of enlightenment. Perhaps a good first step in the direction of getting George W. Bush suitably tarred and feathered would be to congressionalize the investigation of the Wilson-Plame leak. The object of such an investigation, of course, lies way beyond vindicating a lady’s honor. The real object would be to open the discussion on the true motives that lay behind the fiasco in Iraq. This may not be entirely likely, owing to the nature of the powers that exist in the US, but getting the whole sordid mess before the eyes of the general public would be highly salutary in any case. For me the ultimate desideratum is the undoing of the US occupation of Iraq, rather than the unmasking of the president. But it will be highly enjoyable if Bush is made to squirm on the pin quite a while before expiring. Let’s hope that Congress doesn’t beat around the Bush for ever and a day! Let them instead get right on with the task of beating Bush black and blue. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
