Bush's Success In The Middle East

By Dan Shanefield
Nov. 7, 2006

"Success?" Liberal news media writers are predicting ignominious and utter defeat for Republicans, mostly because of Iraq.

But let's stand back a minute and concentrate on the most important events in our recent history. What were our real goals in the Middle East, and in fact, elsewhere in the world? And what has really happened, besides the news media's breathless shouting?

Our number one goal has been to prevent another disaster like the 9/11 attack on the United States, which killed three thousand innocent civilians. Have we had another one? Not in America, we haven't, nor on our ships or airplanes. Instead, we quickly conquered Afghanistan, which even Alexander the Great and the Soviet Communists failed to do (and which our liberal news media predicted we couldn't do either). Of course, the Muslim crazies are still killing each other, but there's no way we will ever be able to stop all the hyper-aggressive crazy people of the world from killing each other --- just look at Africa, and places like Sri Lanka --- too many overpopulated countries in the world with too many modern weapons but not much sanity. Mainly we are doing OK if we just keep them from coming over here and killing us.

If those liberal lawyers Kerry and Edwards had won the last election, there'd be hundreds of Guantanomo Bay crazies released for lack of evidence. We'd be hearing bombs exploding in tunnels and airplanes galore, right during rush hour. (And that might still happen, if the Republicans lose next time.)

Yes, some of our soldiers are being killed in Iraq. But keep in mind that these guys are volunteers, not draftees. It's human nature for a certain percentage of young men to want to fight, and they will sign up for the opportunity to do that, any time we give them a logical sounding rationalization. (When I was a draftee in the Korean War, in 1952, I was absolutely amazed to see how many guys volunteered for dangerous paratroop duty, the marines, underwater demolition teams, etc.) And keep in mind that more American military people die each week in accidents during peacetime, than in Iraq during this war. Democrats say we should have used more soldiers, but should we have drafted them? (In fact what would liberals do differently, that wouldn't make even more trouble in this tough world?)

Our number two goal was to keep the huge oil reserves of Iraq from being sold to buy powerful weapons for crazy-headed Saddam Hussein. The oil is not flowing quite like it should, but least it is flowing, and the profits are supporting schools and infrastructure repairs for Iraq, instead of going to Saddam.

Supporting Israel was our goal number twenty-seven and a half. It is certainly being achieved, but not entirely because of us. Israel's high tech exports are booming all by themselves, and their military guys are helping us as much as we're helping them.

Another important goal of the Bush administration, farther East than Iraq, was to keep China and Pakistan (and maybe India) from nuking us. By the careful use of both the carrot and the stick (mostly the carrot), we have achieved that, beautifully. Now China is even pressuring North Korea to get some common sense, because the Chinese can see which side their bread is buttered on, and it's not on the side of war.

Regarding economics, the U.S. has among the world's lowest unemployment rates and lowest inflation rates. So it looks like the liberal professors of economics are just plain wrong.

If you agree with my point of view, please send the link for this article (http://www.useless-knowledge.com/1234/06nov/article028.html) to Republican politicians, by e-mail, or tell them by whatever means appears practical.
