![]() By Kaycee Nilson Nov. 2, 2006 So I took the boys “Trick-Or-Treating” on Halloween. We stayed out from 2:30 until 8:30 pm. Some where along 6 p.m. I lost all feeling in my feet as I plodded along trying to keep up with the two rats as they ran from house to house. Then I began to think of how silly this holiday is. We dress our children up, send them out into the streets and allow them to beg for candy from strangers. This year, my boys dressed as NASCAR drivers, I was shocked at how many people knew what two drivers they were. The oldest was Tony Stewart and the youngest was Dale Earnhardt, Sr. We now have enough candy to give the entire country of Rowanda cavities. I don’t think I have seen two kids run as fast as the two boys that I call sons ran last night. I hobbled along behind them with my cane and a plastic whistle. They knew that if they got too far out of my sight I would blow that whistle. I even saw adults dressed up. But what got me was the kids that made no effort in dressing up what so ever and they just walked the streets with a bag collecting candy. There has to be something wrong about that. But I think that the funniest thing I saw was an entire family dressed as pirates. Mother, father and two kids, all of them dressed in costume. Now that was class. But the boys had fun, and that was the most important part. Just too see the smiles on their faces and the light dancing in their eyes, well kids, that was a feeling I cannot explain. So those of you that went out with your own children, I hope that you kept track of your feet. And I hope that you had as much fun as I did. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
