Congressional Arrogance Has To End

By Craig Chamberlain
May 31, 2006

The U.S. House of Represenative has a simple job. They make the laws, control the purse strings of government, can pass articles of impeachment and much more. For all that every two years they must face the voters(in increasingly irrelevant elections) of their districts for another term. Yet somewhere along the way they have forgotten something. That while they make the laws they are also required to obey those laws. Apparently they think that while they can make stupid, or half baked laws and force us to live by them they don't have to.

Congress feels that it is better to protect a bribe taker with $90,000 in cold hard cash than to uphold the rule of law. Rather than throw Congressman Jefferson out on his carcass and sending him back to New Orleans, instead they rant and rage that congress hasn't been respected. You have Congressman Issa(R-CA) telling congress that they can impeach Attorney General Gonzalez. So rather than be angry at the man who took $100,000 they want to punish the people going after the crook.

There are two problems that go to the heart of this corruption. First, most districts are so gerrymandered that there is little chance that an incumbent will lose to a challenger, second, there are no term limits. We could solve a lot of our congressional problems if the people demanded term limits, and insisted upon reasonable district lines.

We can go on with congressmen stuffing money into their freezers and being at the call and command of lobbyists, or we can have real citizen legislature. It's time for the people to send congress a message. That message should be: get a different job.
