May 31, 2006 Illegal immigration remains one of the hottest debates for the 2006 election year and one that has as many pitfalls as possible solutions. A fellow writer from UK sent me his version of a possible solution (you know who you are-wink) and I thought it was so good that I would present it in this forum for all to discuss and consider. Let me just begin by saying that we both felt that the fence proposal is not really a viable solution. It would be costly and in reality not much of a deterrent. This (his) idea surpasses that and may even prove to be the best deterrent available. What is it you ask? His proposal begins like this. We dig a trench along our border. Make it wide and deep enough that it is not easy to cross. (Use the dirt dug to create this trench to bolster the dykes and levees in New Orleans.) Maybe make the walls of this trench steep and slippery. We fill this trench with alligators that are oh so hungry and see how many people then try to come into the US illegally. We could even post signs so they know what they are in for. (We could even name this new trench the American-Mexican canal.) I honestly believe this could work. What do you think? As for those that do manage to get across without being eaten, we could staff those hard to cross spots with border patrol agents that can conduct a fingerprint analysis and background check prior to allowing them entrance. Providing those both come back clean, we stamp their passports with a temporary visa and fit them with a microchip that allows us to easily track them. If they wish to become permanent citizens they follow the rules set forth for the rest of the populace that enters the US via legal channels. In addition to this proposal, I feel that if we truly want to hit this issue where it makes the greatest impact we should punish those people that hire these illegal people in the first place. We can send INS agents out into the field to the places where they are most likely to find the illegals at work and believe me they know where they should be looking. When they get to these locations the agents should be allowed to check the status of these workers. Documented persons continue to work, but are given temporary social security cards for tax purposes. Employers are forced to pay FICA for these employees. For those that they cannot document, INS agents fine the employers a flat fee of $50,000 per undocumented worker. The fines are collected as they are incurred. If the employer is unable to pay this fine they will be forced to serve a mandatory jail term of no less than three years with no avenue to serve less time and their businesses will be shut down until they can come into compliance. Sound severe? It may be severe, but it will get their attention and hurt them where they are now making the most from these undocumented workers-in their wallets! As for the weak excuse that these people are performing jobs that the citizens of the US refuse to perform I propose this solution. For people that are now on welfare, we give them these jobs (jobs that the illegals are now performing) to help them to get back on their feet and back to becoming productive people within our society. Employers who hire these people from our welfare system will be given tax breaks for doing so. Both parties win in this proposal because people that need jobs get them and people that need workers get the job done. End of discussion. Perhaps many of my fellow democrats may not see the merit of such a proposal and may even think that I have crossed over to the right. I assure you I am still a champion for and of the people, but the people need to take a proactive part in putting their lives back together and helping America to get back to being number 1. As for my formidable opponents, I offer this bit of advice as merely pointing out the facts. Our system is over taxed and over burdened with the growing numbers of illegal immigrants flowing into our country. It is overtaxed and over burdened with people making lifetimes and generations out of our welfare system. It is overtaxed and over burdened with the mounting costs of continuing this folly in Iraq. We Americans need to take charge. We need to become part of the solution by fixing what has long been amiss. There is no time like NOW. What do we have to lose? I say nothing. And perhaps we have everything to gain. ------------ About the author: Michelle Malsbury was born and raised in Champaign, Illinois. Currently she resides in Florida.
