May 29, 2006 We have been in Iraq almost as long as we were in World War II and have we accomplished anything similar to what we accomplished in World War II? We went into World War II with the idea of blowing the Third Reich to hell and back. We had allies, allies that did not give us token representation. There was a man in Germany by the name of Hitler, who was aggressing against every country in Europe and had no intention of ceasing. On the other hand, a man by the name of Saddam Hussein, small potatoes compared to Hitler, might have had Weapons of Mass Destruction…but didn’t. So, without a real cohesive group of allies and without sufficient troops, the United States went to war. The war drags on and shows no real signs of ending any time soon. Did we learn nothing from Vietnam? We did not aggress against China or Russia because they had nuclear weapons. For some reason they are not part of the President’s well known axis of evil. We have not aggressed against Iran, though we certainly have honked our horns a few times at them. Korea? We haven’t aggressed against that poor country led by an obviously rabid and sick man. Readers have read this same argument many times and it is like a CD with a scratch, just playing repeatedly. So, why keep making the same argument? It’s worthy of occasional repeat performances. Over two thousand troops have been killed. Over eight thousand have been seriously maimed and will not return to the battlefront, wherever the battle- front might be.
Unfortunately, the battlefront in Iraq lies only in the head of a stubborn President, who has a misguided ego and a very poor concept of leadership. If he pulls our troops out now, he might appear weak and human…but only to himself. If he can hang in there until end of his second term, some other poor sucker coming in will have to end the war and listen to the critical screaming of war hawks. Let’s see, two more years of war equals maybe another two thousand soldiers dead. It is unfortunate that the President doesn’t listen “to the doves cry.” But, guys like him never do.
