My Daily Kuwaiti Fill Up

By Michael John McCrae
May 29, 2006

I drive a big SUV over here in the desert. It is a necessity more than a luxury but the air conditioning works great and the seats are comfortable.

Another thing that is comfortable is what I pay for a liter of gasoline. The price per liter is .065 fils, about $.26 American cents and at 3.79 liters per gallon it’s about $.90 cents., The math may be a little shaky, but gas is still less than a dollar a gallon here.

We say supply and demand determine price. There is no more demanding a place for gasoline than in Kuwait. With every driver determined to be the first to get anywhere they go fast. They go very fast!

The roads are posted for speeds between 50 and 80 miles per hour and everyone (including me so I don’t get run off the road) drives very past the posted limits. Cars do not stop here either. All stop signs are suggestions only. If you allow one inch the next driver will insist it is his and squeeze his car into it. I would write that “it’s dog-eat-dog” out on Kuwaiti highways, but dogs are frowned upon here. It is more like “cat-eat-cat”.

When I read about the very high price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States I note how fortunate even the least fortunate car owners of Kuwait are. These folks can still fill a tank for under a “dinar” (three bucks).

Why?

Could it be because they drill their own oil? Could it be that after they drill their own oil they refine their own oil? Could it be that after refinement they manage to transport their own oil to their own gas stations? Could it be because Kuwait does not have a restrictive Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) continually creating regulations on the amounts of certain chemicals in certain types of fuel?

Kuwait burns diesel in most trucks, Mercedes Benzes and busses, Kerosene in most generators and space heaters, propane in most stoves and two types of gasoline for automobiles; “Super” and “Premium”. I purchase “super” for the SUV.

Everyone drives everywhere here and when they can’t or don’t drive they take the bus. Kuwait is a virtual sea of busses during any given “rush” hour and all hours in between. Driving in downtown Kuwait City is always an adventure in “Dodge Bus” which is akin to American “Dodge Ball”.

America has got to get off its collective can and start drilling. I read that the Chinese are going to be drilling 75 miles off the American coast and America is not allowed to do that. The EPA says so. I read today that the House has passed ANWR drilling but the Senate will not follow the (same) sane line of reasoning. The caribou and the marsh grasses that appear for the one month of summer must not be trampled upon by those nasty, price-gouging, blood-sucking, capitalistic and war-mongering Halliburtonistas!

Mexico is going to expand drilling in the Gulf and Vicente Fox is rubbing America’s nose in that, among other things. The Presidente of Mexico has “cajones” the size of the states he’s running his illegal border jumpers into (you just knew I’d get that in there) thinking he can make an American tour and convince us all what a great guy he really is, when he is a large-mouth crud who cannot control or help his own countrymen. But I’m a little off track here.

Here’s your point. Drill in America. Refine in America. Transport in America. Complete the technologies to convert corn crops and coal to liquid fuels. Get rid of all the senseless EPA policies on fuel additives and unleaded-ness. Give greater incentives to drivers who elect hydrogen powered vehicles and solar powered vehicles and alternative fuel vehicles. Expand the railroads and manufacture only busses that run on electricity or hydrogen for the inner cities. Cease importing Middle Eastern oil for 2 years and watch the price drop to $15 a barrel. That would benefit the whole world, not just America. And stop trying to snow the American population into thinking all that can’t be done!

Remember! I can fill a 30 gallon tank (driving a tank) for $10 bucks!
