May 29, 2006 Political scandals, devastating hurricanes, earthquakes, block-buster films that flopped, Tom Cruise and his couch jumping and anti-psychiatric tirades, babies born out of wedlock being all the rage....Namibia, at the request of two spoiled, rich movie stars expelling reporters and violating human rights for the almighty dollar and a shot at fame and fortune, Presidential polls lower than any since Richard Nixon and Watergate, gas prices through the roof and people making decisions as to whether to buy life-saving medicine or eating three meals a day...the list goes on and on. The world is a sad place and wars rage on. Movie stars are worshipped and porn stars like Paris Hilton are revered and continue to make millions of dollars for simply existing. The future does not look bright yet here we are and it's Memorial Day and time to remember those who fought to make this country what it is. I wonder how those fallen heroes would feel if they could see what they fought for? Would they shake their heads in horror or smile that we are still here to bitch and moan over the price of a gallon of gasoline? Would they be glad that they gave their lives so that future generations could be free to worship non-entities like Brangelina and Paris Hilton? Would they be shocked at the hatred directed at the Commander In Chief of all those branches of the armed-forces that they belonged to? What would they say if they could speak? I can't know the answer to that so I asked a living veteran of the second world war for his opinion and this is what he said: "I served my country proudly and I saw my friends die all around me. I have shrapnel in my body that could not be removed and I walk with a permanent limp as a result of a taking a bullet in the leg. I came home to a family who seemed like strangers and couldn't find a job. I had to settle for grunt work until I could get an education and become the Doctor that I was before I retired. That education was my reward for serving my country and the government paid for it in full. The first home that I bought for my family was purchased under the GI Bill otherwise I could never have afforded it. The government gave me low interest payments and asked for no down payment so we could have our first home. I raised three children and they prospered as have their children and they bring me pleasure each and every day of what is left of my life. I am 84 years old and counting and I proudly salute my fellow soldiers who are in harms way as we speak. What do I think of the state of the world? Well, it's never been easy and there have always been political scandals and something always costs too much and people worshipped Clark Gable and Betty Grable just as they worship the stars of today. In other words, nothing has changed and the freedom that me and my buddies fought for, and some died for, exists now just as it did then. If we had fought and died for nothing you would not be typing your opinions on the Internet (something I'll never get, nor do I want to)!! Freedom is alive and well and today. I believe that more than ever before because more people speak their minds and more are heard. I would not take back the service to my country for anything and I would do it again if they'd have an old man like me. I salute my comrades in arms and I salute the American people for carrying on the traditions of freedom." I agree with him. I hope that we all remember what this day is about and appreciate the freedom that we have. Thank you friend, and thank you to all those who fought alongside you....thank you to those in harms way as I type this and may God be with you all. You have given me the freedom to speak. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling. https://www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=27335 Email: writers2@cox.net Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
