William Jefferson (D. LA) - Well We're Movin' On Up!

By Michael John McCrae
May 28, 2006

“Well we’re movin’ on up! To the sky! We finally got a piece of the pie!”

“The Jeffersons” was one of my favorite situation comedies. George was always getting in trouble with “Martha” ala “George Jetson”, “Fred Flintstone”, “Ralph Kramden” and other more notable schleps whose wives “Jane”, “Wilma” and “Alice” had to put up with the weekly masculine missives of their klutzy hubbies.

Real life is sometimes a mirror image of the silver screen. I don’t know if that is a quote or I just made that up based on something I read previously but Rep. William Jefferson (D. LA) is making George, Fred and Ralph out to be papal material.

Not only did Rep. Jefferson commandeer a military vehicle during the Katrina flood to help him personally vacate his Louisiana home; when the first vehicle became mired in the mud (as in any given sitcom situation) he promptly commandeered a second evacuation vehicle to rescue the first. Both vehicles were supposed to be evacuating the city at the time.

Not only does Rep. Jefferson make news with his sitcom-like antics, there are others who have joined the cast of democratic characters in this comedic excursion into the unreal world of the “Culture of Corruption”.

From an article in FOXNEWS.com entitled: “Former Aide to Rep. Jefferson Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison” we read: “WASHINGTON — A former aide to Rep. William Jefferson was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison for his role in a bribery scandal involving the congressman.”

“Brett Pfeffer, 37, of Herndon, Va., pleaded guilty in January to two bribery-related charges: conspiracy to commit bribery and aiding and abetting bribery of a public official. Jefferson's name did not come up in the hearing in federal court, but other documents have made clear he is that public official.”

Whew! Rep. Jefferson escaped that sitcom situation only to find himself in another comical corner. From the article: “Specifically, Pfeffer admitted to helping broker deals between Jefferson, D.-La., and a northern Virginia investment executive for whom Pfeffer worked. That executive, who has not been identified in court documents, agreed to pay bribes to Jefferson after Pfeffer said the congressman would require it. "I've gone over in my head 10 million times why I didn't look him in the eye and say no ... why I allowed myself to take his demands to my boss," Pfeffer said during the sentencing.”

The situations don’t get much more “sit-comical”. This is almost as good as catching Marion Barry in a coke deal! This is almost as hilarious as Rep. John Conyers (D) pressing his aids into an unpaid babysitter service or Rep. Barney Frank (D), running a Page Boy Prostitution ring out of his home. It’s just a laugh-a-minute with those riotous Democrats!

You have got to treat your employees right though or it will come back to bite you in your den of iniquity! More from the article: “The executive later became disenchanted with her business deals and approached the FBI. She agreed to wear a wire and recorded conversations with Jefferson in which he used coded conversations to discuss bribes, according to court documents. Jefferson also was videotaped taking a briefcase with $100,000 in $100 bills from the executive's car. The money was found several days later in Jefferson's freezer.”

Man! We have the lies and we have the videotape…we’re just missing the SEX! Kind of gives the exact meaning to the term “COLD, HARD CASH!

The law being what it is (you know; innocent before proven guilty unless you are a Republican like Tom Delay or Karl Rove or Scooter Libby) Rep. Jefferson gets to keep his position, salary and bribery influence until Hillary gets elected and pardons him. (Oh, was that sarcastic?)

More from the article: “Pfeffer worked for Jefferson in the mid-1990s and maintained a professional relationship with him. After introducing Jefferson to his boss, Pfeffer advised her that Jefferson would expect something in return for his assistance in brokering the deal.” (As in large wads of warm cash needing time in a deep freeze to become COLD and HARD!)

Continuing: “Another Jefferson associate, a Louisville, Ky., telecommunications executive named Vernon Jackson, has pleaded guilty to paying more than $400,000 in bribes to Jefferson in exchange for his assistance securing business deals in Nigeria and other African nations.”

OOPS! Rep. Jefferson is faced with a second “squealer” and now it is up to the Congress to pull Jefferson’s fat out of the fires of corruption. Let’s rise up that “standard of the double!” The FBI can’t do that to us here in our Congressional chambers! There’s such a thing as separations of powers and us in Congress being above the law and better than everyone else in the whole United States!

Thank goodness for “whistleblowers” (or in the case of Democrats against Democrats “Leakers”). From the article: “Pfeffer's eight-year term was in the mid-range of the federal sentencing guidelines. Pfeffer has agreed to cooperate in the ongoing probe of Jefferson. A prosecutor said Pfeffer may be eligible for a reduction of his sentence once his cooperation is complete.”

I hope they never find a can of WD-40 big enough to keep Mr. Pfeffer from squealing!

Quote: “U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis III said a tough sentence was necessary to deter others from public corruption.”

Let us hope Rep. Jefferson’s comedic rise in corruption results in the correct amount of “deterrence” for the rest of Congress. Let’s hope Rep. Jefferson is “Movin’ On Up” to the Big House.
