![]() By Jack Lepiarz May 28, 2006 In "X-Men: The Last Stand," we see an overdone action movie with lots of explosions, fighting, and special effects, and just about no real story. So, in other words, we have another overdone piece of Hollywood cinema (was that sentence redundant?). I would like to say this before I begin: X-Men was by no means a boring movie. It had more than enough action and suspense to keep me watching the whole time. It's always fun to watch Wolverine beat people up, and Hugh Jackman does the character very well, just as he did in the past two movies, despite some of the disgustingly bad lines he had to say. But too much of the movie is action. Nearly every scene leads into someone getting killed or beat up (badly). A simple scene of the "Iceman" looking to find his girlfriend leads to a building getting its ground floor blown up. Completely unnecessary. In the past two movies, there was always some way to associate with Magneto. To understand him. Unfortunately, this movie turned Magneto into something of an evil dictator--not what he was supposed to look like in the past two movies. He abandons age-old friends for no reason while mourning the deaths of others. And speaking of deaths, I'd like to mention that, of the X-men that had any real parts in the original two movies, only about five or six of them actually survive. Nightcrawler, from the second movie, never even makes a single appearance. I guess about half of the original cast must have decided that they didn't want to make another movie, because about half of them died in the first half-hour, or just had about 3 lines in the entire movie. But back to Magneto. The film's writers try to paint Magneto as a disgusting character, but then try to offer him some sympathy in the movie's final moments. Apparently, they wanted Magneto to be a man of extremes. On one hand, he doesn't care about killing hundreds of humans and mutants (who are supposed to be his "brothers"), making him look like someone that the audience should hate, but then they paint him as a poor, defenseless old man that needs the audience's sympathy. The dialogue in the movie, though, is absolutely riveting. Any movie that can condense an entire conversation (and death) into five words (three lines) is extraordinary. Honestly, where is Jerry Bruckheimer when you need him? Oh yes, doing the second Pirates of the Caribbean (and hopefully making Jack Sparrow still the best pirate ever to grace the big screen). And if that wasn't enough, the movie's final scene contains a huge shocker, which you only catch a glimpse of before the movie goes into its credits. The problem is that the huge twist (supposed to lead into a possible fourth movie) is barely even visible. I say with perfect confidence that 50 percent of the audience did not even catch the twist. Writers, if you're going to make a sudden twist at the end of the movie and end it there, make sure people can actually see it. Even I, with 20/20 vision barely caught this. Basically, "X-Men: The Last Stand" was a disappointment. As I left, I heard boos from the audience. It has awful dialogue, and a weak storyline. The characters make little to no sense, and some of the coolest characters turn into whiny wimps at some point. Basically, if you caught Darth Vader screaming "No!" in "Revenge of the Sith," you know what to expect. Rent this movie after it leaves theaters, because it is definitely not worth paying $15 to see some guys get blown up. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a senior at Madison High School.
