Time For A Fourth Party

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
May 25, 2006

With both Democrats and Republicans finding little favor with the citizenry right now, with the president's and congress's approval ratings both low down right now, would this not be a good time for another party to make some political hay and gain some seats in congress and even, perhaps, have a legitimate shot at the presidency in a couple years? One would think that idea would strike a third party.

But what is a third party to do to attract sufficient voters? The issues that have resonated with the citizenry, the war against terrorism and the security of the borders, haven't been adopted by a significant third party. The Libertarian Party is as suicidal as ever, holding to an open border philosophy that would destroy the other freedoms that the party espouses, and it has been a remarkably pacifist party in the main. No wonder it doesn't win elections. The Libertarian Party has beome known as the marijuana legalization party, but that's not going to win over a majority of voters.

In the next few years, the winning issues are going to be securing the borders and protecting American culture. It should strike the Libertarians that it is the American culture and its penchant for freedom which allows the liberty that they cherish. It should also strike them that allowing American culture to be lost through a massive influx of illegal aliens or through attacks by Muslim extremists would mean that, for all practical purposes, their ideal libertarian society would become much more unlikely to the point of impossibility.

If the Libertarian Party took its basic message of freedom and personal responsibility and added a big helping of national defense and border security, they might have a winning ticket. Do I expect them to pull back from their continuous flirtation with suicide? No.

Most of the other small parties, the "greens" et al, are even more left-wingish and unlikely to persuade voters they are the party to make the country secure.

This might have been the year for Pat Buchanan to have won with his isolationist message, but then the left and the media have spent so much time demonizing him that he may not be much of a force now.

So VOTE FOR ME, THE NON-SUICIDAL, RATIONAL LIBERTARIAN! BROOKS FOR PREZ! I'll secure the borders, fight the terrorists, and keep the bluenoses out of your bedroom and the tax collectors out of your wallet! I'm the SANE LIBERTARIAN!
