May 23, 2006 It appears that this administration has made the move from radical to ridiculous once more. From where I sit I believe we need to first secure our ports, air, rail, and borders before we can begin to enforce or revise our immigration policies. Sending temporary troops to the border is not securing them in my humble opinion. We need to recruit and hire real border patrol agents (both north and south) and allow them to enforce the laws we already have on the books. We need to quit letting Vincente Fox dictate or attempt to manipulate our policies in this regard. Get a backbone America! Our ports have been taken over largely by foreign firms leaving us without opportunity or access for appropriate screening of cargo coming in from around the globe. Leaving our ports wide open to crafty people with hate on their minds is just plain dumb! This needs to be changed and addressed now, not later! We need to hire American people or companies to man these ports and give them the tools and authority necessary to screen each and every container that enters our ports to ensure the safety of all within our borders. Airport security is another huge bungle since 9/11. People wait in day long lines for the simple screening of carry on luggage while those bags that are transported via the cargo holds have no such scrutiny. We need more and better means to screen both the carry on and the baggage that is checked. We need more credentialed people to perform this tireless duty. There needs to be armed guards that check the identity of all people entering secured areas of our airports to ensure that all potential loopholes are closed to unauthorized interlopers. Many pieces of cargo or personnel originate either in our ports or in our airways before coming aboard our railway systems. If they were not checked when entering this country they certainly are not checked this far into their travels. Railway cargo needs to be scanned and searched just like those that come into the ports or air terminals. All persons traveling on our railways need to have their identities fully checked out prior to embarking on each leg of their journeys. This may seem like a lot to do about nothing, but I assure you it is anything but. Come on America this is the safety and security of ALL of America we are talking about. Do you want to see another 9/11 happen? If not, then take a proactive part in this process by calling or writing your local congress people or representatives to tell them how you feel about this lack of border, port, air, and rail security and urge them to take the necessary steps to stop another tragedy like 9/11.
