May 22, 2006 From time to time, I find myself struggling with what I want to say and how I want to say it. More often than not, I’m able to pull myself out of it by finding something different to say. The words, then, come easier, more freely, and I get to share more of the wisdom of the ancients. Occasionally, though, I truly get blocked. That is, I’m unable to finish what I start or, in the most severe cases, start anything at all. Writer’s block is nothing new to anyone who writes on a regular basis. Right now, I’m staring at a block caused by an overabundance of topics to write on. I’ve started several pieces that I hope to post soon here on Useless Knowledge, but just haven’t been able to focus enough to finish them. My mind is simply wandering, trying to figure out how to finish up each piece, and I’m not happy with anything I’ve tried to date. Thus the recent lack of productivity. In the past, I’d be beating myself down for not writing more often. But writing isn’t the end-all and be-all of my life. There are other things I enjoy doing. Reading, for example, is a big one, and not a day goes by that I don’t read at least one article from someone. Playing video games is another. I’m still trying to finish all the Challenge Sheets on the wonderful racing game Burnout Revenge on the PS2, and I’m just getting the hang of The Movies on the PC. Then there’s that wife of mine. It’s hard to believe that we’ve been married for six years; some days it seems like we’re just meeting for the first time, and others it seems like I went to kindergarten with her. But she’s well worth my time, believe me. Like other writing blocks, I’ll eventually overcome this one. My thoughts, once fully corralled, will make for some lively reading and discussion. At least, I hope they do, anyway. ------------ About the author: Claxton Graham has written a number of articles for Useless Knowledge. He works as a business systems analyst.
