May 17, 2006 Define a technologust to be a nanobot capable of colonizing a world by ingesting any type of gas, liquid, or solid and creating any type of chemical compound desirable. Theoretically, with such robust technologust capability, and with linkage to at least one super-ultra-intelligent post-singularity humanoid, swarms of linked technologusts soon will land on Mars and start to render Mars suitable for non-singular Earth humans to colonize. By then the Moon will already have been turned into a veritable green-cheese paradise. So picture us all here on Earth, on a day not so very far ahead. Already nanobots buzz and hum around us looking something like gnats. We hear them flying around our heads like sweat bees and sometimes a nanobot gets tangled up in our hair. These nanobots are simply gathering information so that we can be processed by the singular human whose intelligence is trillions of times greater than that of Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Leonardo da Vinci all combined. All this nanobottery is totally credible, now that AI scientists agree that the singularity is near. Many of these supersmart people are saying that soon all this will be happening! Nanobees and technologusts will be buzzing and humming virtually everywhere, gathering information and transforming the world all around us near and far! Take this a step further. With super-ultra-magnification of human intelligence there won't be enough words to define all that the singular intelligence knows. Consequently the higher intelligence will have trillions more words than exist today. You are likely to believe this, once you believe all that AI stuff. After all, the singular intelligence is virtually boundless and hey. Virtually anything is possible in virtual reality! Just write the AI code, create the AI program, and run AI on your computer. All around your monitor you will see swarms of nanobots appear. At some point I intend to try and be serious about what I think the singularity is about, and what the AI dream is about. Right now, though, you need to understand that a long time ago, back in college I was a biology major, and I was taught that metaphorically speaking the engine of evolution by natural selection virtually runs on the fuel of physical plant and animal death. To make evolution work, new-born generations replace the old dead or dying generations and this replacement makes way for genetic variations which may adapt to environmental change. In fact, billions of years ago, before there was any sex and death, there was the perpetuation of the same genotype and whole seascapes were covered with genetically identical cells, froth, or slime. There was relatively little variation in organic life. The fact is, humanity evolved ONLY because there was death and natural selection that requires death. New generations occupy the landscape where our ancestors once lived. The AI engineers seem to want to forget biology. In fact computer engineers aren't required to study evolution. On campus, after all, biological science is an entirely different academic department from computer science. Forgetting all about biology, then, certain computer scientists proclaim that humanity is destined to become super-ultra-intelligent, so that singular humans will be so smart that they can run everything. Of course the skeptics don't believe in a personality of universal manager or "God." So if God isn't running the universe, what or who is running the universe? God or no God, some humans want to control everything, as though they were God. Yes, humans even want to conquer death. If AI gets its way, soon the post-singularity technologusts will take over. Will they be able to pull this off without making a single error? Dammit, my humble computer crashes sometimes. Can't the engineers fix my humble computer before they try transforming the universe? Anyway, once the technologusts start multiplying on Earth, with their ability to turn any substance into gold or anything else that the God-like post-singularity human wants, what will keep the technologusts from flying all over us and covering us with their nonobot bodies and devouring us utterly and turning us all into solid gold? Jeepers creepers Midas! The AI nanotech scientists, of course, will become the singular humans who hold the universe in control and they will get all the gold. Consequently it's no wonder that they are enthusiastic about the singularity! You are free to use this rough draft as a plot for your next sci-fi pulp fiction thriller. By all means, be my guest. While you're at it, invent a few million words to titillate and bemuse the sci-fi audience. If you can't invent that many words, then just hire an AI programmer to create a pre-singularity word-invention program. With all those neologisms cramming the pages from cover to cover, your book won't need a story line. You can call your novel "Word Salad" or "Dalas Drow." Go for it. Make your mark before quadrillions of nanobots start swarming out of computers and come and eat the people (and everything else) up. Once everything's been turned into solid gold (or into solid woman if the singular human is male and women is what he wants,) the god of the nanobots will be in nanobot heaven and all will be right with the super-ultra-intelligent singular humanoid! As for the future of humanity, all the blood, flesh, and bone of our descendants will no longer exist. Evolving carbon-based organic life will have become deathless inorganic silicon life.
