May 10, 2006 Alaskan children, especially Alaskan Girls, look up to the first woman four time champion of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, Susan Butcher. This woman showed strength and courage. She is facing her biggest challenge now, Susan Butcher is in Washington State waiting for her bone marrow transplant surgery. My prayers go out to her. I met Susan Butcher when I was a child at the Alaska State fair. She was sitting regally in a booth. I walked up to her feeling shy. I had watched her and followed her through news reports when she was racing. I admired her. Meeting her was a highlight of my life. She reached out took my small hand and smiled. I wanted her autograph; she happily gave it. Then, she said something I remember clearly, "Always follow your dreams. I did." I smiled, thanked her then skipped away. I took that advice to heart. Being a published author was my dream. I followed it. I have been published twice. And then I write for this web magazine. Susan Butcher inspired me. This woman is a mentor to many Alaskan children. Susan Butcher is one of the strongest women I ever met. I hope everything goes well for her and she can continue to inspire future dreamers.
