Colossians Chapter 3:1-11 - The Christian

By Skip Toomaloo

“1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-3 NIV)

This has got to be the heart of the Christian. The Christian doesn’t concern himself with the whims of men or their self-centered philosophies. The Christian doesn’t concern himself with the dogmas and religious legislation of men against the plain word of scripture. The Christian does not entertain the earthly (and cursed) things.

The Christian is “dead” to all that. Though he walks amid the world’s enticements he is able to ignore all that doesn’t add to his spiritual walk and work for the True God. The Christian is already “raised”. The Christian is alive and valuable. He has great value to the world because he cares enough to see those in the world escape death and enter into life. In that caring he preaches the only message capable of dragging a soul into God’s eternal kingdom.

“5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other,” (Colossians 3:5-9a NIV)

Being dead to the world the Christian is admonished to “put off” or “put to death” the things that make up the natural nature of the unspiritual. The “wrath of God is against the entire list. He makes no special distinctions between types and sizes of sins. All sin is sin and any one sin is as bad as the next. Only natural men find ways to say some sin is not so bad. God sees the folly of calling evil “good” and calling good “evil”.

Every Christian who has ever lived and lives now “used to walk in these ways”. No man was ever born without sin save one; Jesus Christ. It was that one sinless man that was able to redeem the race of men. No other single being is capable of redeeming even his own soul from death. There is only one name under heaven given among men whereby men must be saved; Jesus Christ.

“…since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.” (Colossians 3:10-11 NIV)

This is the Christian. It doesn’t matter what the background of the individual was before faith. What matters is the Lord in the life after faith is given to the soul. Every nation in the world has access to the message of the Gospel of Christ. Media and marketing have brought copies of the Scriptures to every nation in its national language. Missionaries still work with remote tribes and groups of people to learn unwritten languages and translate God’s words to a language understandable to the most primitive humans. This was and is the commission Christ gave to his followers: Preach the word in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and to the “uttermost” parts of the earth. That is the Christian.
