May 4, 2006 Walking around a store or theme park has become a combative experience. People dodge, push, and shove to get to merchandise that they really don't need. People talk in loud voices into electric devices or pull kids along by the arm to get to the next shopping location. This might not seem so important to some but there are those who do care. The ones, that I have observed that do care, are the foreign tourists that visit our country each year on vacation. Why can't the people of this country, when they go out, be on their Sunday behavior? Or is Sunday behavior only reserved for church? It isn't hard. Yes, an individual has the right in this country to be a litter bug, to be rude and to make their life seem more important than their neighbors. But then you hear the question about why the rest of the world hates us. The answers I have heard are basically that they are just jealous. The answer I came up with myself is that the world sees us as spoiled brats that only care about ourselves. Yes, we are the world police force that goes into stop huge bullies from harming other people. That is a church value that we as a country should keep. But who likes the police except the police? Who likes the rude policeman who breaks down the door and then says "sorry, wrong place?" Not many people. So, why not treat each other in our own country nicely? American should care how the world sees us. If we are nicer to each other then more dollars will flow in places we'd expect and some places that might surprise us. Saying please and thank you to store clerks would be a start, we should stop pushing through crowds and start waiting our turns. We should stop cutting people off on the road and just smile at a stranger, saying a little "hello" for no reason.
I know this sounds IDEALISTIC but it is doable. I
think everybody should try to be nice once a day,
everyday, not just on Sunday's and holidays. Then we,
American's, can change our image and make the American
Dream seem better to the world.
