How To Survive A Boring Class

By Jack Lepiarz
May 4, 2006

I am bored beyond belief right now, sitting in a class with little to no work to do. My teacher has designated the class as an independent study time, and I have nothing to do. So what do I do? I think of things to do.

I guess that's where I got the inspiration for this article--how to survive a boring class, or at least make it go faster. I have seen any number of tips and tricks for surviving these horrendous classes, and I hope that this will compile some of the best ideas that I have come across.

1. The number one way to make a class go faster is, you guessed it, to sleep. Sleeping is a quick, easy, and relatively painless way to make time fly by. However, this, like anything on this list, does carry its risks. You must make sure not to snore, and not to suddenly jerk awake. Failure to comply with that can create a very unhappy teacher.

2. There is also a lovely game called Tic-Tac-Toe. However, that game lost all appeal a long time ago, and so I have another game that got me through a number of boring chemistry lessons last year. It's called "Kill the Snail." It's quite simple, really, although it does require two people. In order to play, you must designate one person as the "evil" one and another as the "good" one. Then, draw a snail onto a piece of paper and have the evil person draw various ways to kill the snail. I, for example, am notorious for drawing salt shakers on top of the snail, while the good person will often draw a table above the snail, or make a fan to blow away the salt. There are only two rules: No force-fields and no nukes.

3. If Kill the Snail doesn't work (teachers tend to notice their students passing a piece of paper back and forth repeatedly), you can always try writing. In fact, it's precisely what I'm doing right now, and lo' and behold, it's already 12:06! I've managed to waste ten minutes, and now it's only 25 minutes until lunch! But, on a more serious note, simply writing one's thoughts is an excellent way to pass the time. Plus, it looks like you're taking notes.

4. Sudokus, crossword puzzles, and word searches are brilliant.

5. A simple daydream can pass the time wonderfully. One important piece of advice however: Don't stare at the teacher while you're zoned out. It's bad, and often leads to bad results. The teacher can get the idea that you're creepy--or that you have a crush on them. Just don't wink at them a lot.

6. Write with your non-dominant hand. I've been writing the last couple sentences like that, and it's already 12:15. Another 9 minutes used up!

7. Watch people outside. This approach works especially well when there happens to be a gym class outside your classroom. Like right now. I'm watching two boys play frisbee, and it most certainly beats watching the clock.

And with that, it's now 12:18, and I'm finished. Well, actually it's about 1:33, but I hand-wrote this article at 12:18 and I'm reading off of a piece of paper. I hope that these will help you a little better than some of the many other ideas on the internet (answering teacher's questions with a blowhorn will not get you an A). Now, if you'll please excuse me, I have a daydream to attend to.
