May 4, 2006 “15 The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15 NIV) The new cry of the tolerant is that everyone is right. Everyone’s rightness is a matter of perspective. Everything can have that moderate or “gray” spot. There is no absolute. There is no absolute right, wrong, black, white, fire, ice or moral authority. Everything is somewhat bendable should some sort of flaw be found that someone finds offensive or just not up to their personal standard. There was a period in human history the scripture labels the period of the Judges. This was a period where the people would be moral and right and exercise justice as long as there was a God-ordained individual enforcing the Law among the people. When the judge died, the people would go back to their previous sinful ways; everyone “doing that which was right in his own eyes”. There’s a lot of that going on in the world today. The “wise man listens to advice”. The advice of scripture asks men to be respectful of neighbors and treat them as they would like to be treated no matter how they in turn treat the wise. There is another request of scripture that asks that we live peacefully among all men “as much as lays in us” to do so. We listen to this advice because we prefer peace to war and we prefer relationship with God to chastisement from God. “16 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.” (Proverbs 12: 16 NIV) This proverb can’t be much truer if you read my email. I do not write for an atheistic audience. I write to support and defend the faith of my fellow Christians. Yet, I somehow manage to draw the ire of an audience of individuals who probably shouldn’t even be reading my articles because they don’t even believe in God. Why would they bother reading articles they already know they will never agree with? I think that shows the “foolish” part of any of heir arguments. The arguments and the insults of atheists and religionists who insist on multiple gods are easily overlooked. Knowing the God of Heaven one can easily see the folly of arguments out of pride or vanity. God is sovereign. That is probably the most important aspect of who God is. He does not have to answer for his actions to his creation. He has already explained himself and made provision for the survival of the race of men. That is good enough. It is eventually for men to try to explain to God their failure in recognizing his provision. “17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies.” (Proverbs 12:17 NIV) This is a simple statement of fact that is very important. It is important because it applies to every man, but most inclusively the Apostles, the Prophets and those kings and princes raised up by God to rule his nation and his people. These were also the voices that witnessed the events of God’s dealings with men, especially the event of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. False witnesses were easily identified and can be in these days. Salvation has never been by the works of one’s hands. This fact has been known from the time of Cain and Abel. Yet, there are still many religions our there that are Law-based or works-based religions that will get man to heaven by somehow pleasing God through their deeds absent faith in Christ. That’s just wrong. And of course anyone who suggests there is no God at all is just deliberately missing all the more important signs. “18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18 NIV) I approach each of my articles in prayer. I ask God specifically to keep my heart toward the individual so it may sometimes seem I am being reckless in my presentation of the truths of scripture. I will admit when I set scripture aside and push my own opinions I am really practicing a form of recklessness that does not become Christianity. It is important for the Christian not to stray from God’s wisdom and word. Natural men have no defense and cannot mount any adequate offense against what God has given. We should always remain comforted in that. The proof is in the historical preservation of the story of Jesus. “19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” (Proverbs 12:19 NIV) And this cannot be stressed enough. Those who speak against God do not stand the tests of truth. The majority of the world recognizes a god and there is reason for that. It is because God puts that intuition into every soul that sees life. The scriptures tell us of men who fail to see the true God in what they experience. They change the true God into all manner of false gods and creeping things. Many of those gods have been relegated to the history of men; found to be false and misleading; none of which were capable of the witnessed miracles of Jesus.
