May 4, 2006 Raindrops on bare green skin inspire this dialog between the hot extremist secular humanist t411sh and the cool antifanatical polymathic personality and upstart infidel Green Frog: t411sh: “If religious fanatics did not exist, I would not be forced to write my opinions through an alias out of fear of harassment and death threats. This is what religious fanatics do. They're like termites. They chew through our foundations with their hatred and ignorance until everything around us begins to fall apart.” Green Frog: “Ahhhrump! “You mean like the deconstructionists? I didn’t know they were such religious fanatics. Ahhhrump!” t411sh: “And what do we do? We just sit back and tolerate them. As millions are being affected by the disease, the epidemic of religion, most of us just sit in silence with our eyes closed tightly.” Green Frog: “Yes, but relatively few religious people are religious fanatics and there are fanatically destructive persons (comparable to the Unabomber and Lee Harvey Oswald) who are not religious fanatics. In your extremism you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater! And by the way... was Hitler a religious fanatic? What about Stalin? Ahhhhrump!” t411sh: “My opinions on religion are constantly being attacked by fundamentalists and pacifists. But why? Because I do not allow myself to be persuaded by the mythology of religion, and because I do not tolerate intolerance? I only wish for one thing. I want to see humanity become more unified, productive, and content. But this will never happen as long as religions that preach arrogance, intolerance, and conservatism are allowed to thrive. We must promote a better way. We can't continue to sit back and watch our world be destroyed by the evils of dogmas like Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.” Green Frog: “Well, I tend to agree with you on this. The question is WHAT is the new teaching that is agreeable to psychic, intuitive religious people as well as to psychic and intuitive people like me???You see, ideas come to me in dreams at night and in dreams by day as well. I am the consummate dreamer. Sometimes I imagine that a bigger bullfrog than me croaked explosively and banged the whole universe into existence. Aaaahrump!” t411sh: “The key to a better world is through philosophies based on the natural goodness of humanity and nature.” Green Frog: “Goodness in What subject? You need to be more specific. You talk about philosophies. Well, the philosopher Socrates would prove to everyone that your talk is flimsy. To understand how, read Plato's Dialogues.” T411sh: “I say "philosophies", the plural of "philosophy", because I understand the chances of everyone adhering to the same philosophy is highly improbable. The next best thing would be for us to adhere to one of the varieties of Humanism or Transhumanism, a way of thinking that would put more attention on the study and improvement Green Frog: “Ahhhh. Excuse me for intruding, but what do you mean by "improvement"?” T411sh: “of ourselves and nature,” Green Frog: “How do you improve upon nature== phusica==physics? Who do you think you are, God?” T411sh: “than on the worship of beings and places that only exist in myth. Green Frog: “Ahhh. But saints and yogis have existed in reality, and yogis still project a sense of strong psychic connection that meditators often share during periods of sustained eye contact.” t411sh: “We should also try to be more in tune with the paths put forth by our evolution; which is just a poetic way of saying we should be more progressive.” Green Frog: “Ahhh… progressive to what? To what are we progressing to? Sci-tech annihilation? You can label yourself progressive but so what? You can label yourself anything you want.” T411sh: “We should not try to keep everything in our lives the same, or try to go against the grain of our evolution by following unchanged traditions like the conservatives would prefer. Nothing new can come from repetition, and to improve we must always look forward for the next great innovations.” Green Frog: “Ahhh... we must do more than look forward to innovation. We need to innovate fast enough to prevent the next major asteroidal impact so that it won't exterminate the human race.” t411sh: “The great advantage of Humanism is that it is all about being unified and progressive.” Green Frog: “How do you prove that statement? Again, you can label yourself and your movement anything you like. Words by themselves don't change reality.” T411sh: “It is a philosophy based on being human,” Green Frog: Ahh. Human??? The truth is, nearly all of our human ancestors were religious. By championing the word "human" you are shooting yourself in the foot.” T411sh: “which is something we can all relate to. It doesn't try to divide us into groups, or condemn us because of our personal beliefs. Green Frog: “Not so. I can show you a U-K columnist-humanist who emails me saying that I am as crazy as...well, I won't tell. This man just likes to imagine that he stands high up in judgement over other people, sortof, you know, like the mythic God he denies. Maybe it's because he has a towering IQ. As for myself, I'm only a frog-man.” T411sh: “In a Humanist world, things such as race and sexual orientation would only be seen as subtle differences rather than serious dividing issues.” Green Frog: “I'm French and German and English. What about you? Religion doesn't always prevent intermarriage. Love is stronger than holy writ.” T411sh: “Christian groups like the KKK would no longer exist. And if medical science ever finds a way to make us healthier, and prolong our lives, this medicine would be available for everyone.” Green Frog: “So how will humanists terminate the KKK, and how will humanists create the new society?” T411sh: “Humanism is about supporting all humanity, and not just the privileged few.” Green Frog: “How is humanism supporting me when some humanists insist that I am crazy? Ahhhhrump!” t411sh: “Some people may accuse me of being a dreamer. But haven't our greatest ideas come from our dreams, our hopes for something better? From all that I've read on religion and Humanism, I see no reason to believe Humanism wouldn't be a worthy replacement for religion. Think about it. On one side you have Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, three religions designed to exploit our fears, promote intolerance, and keep our minds closed to science and reason. Green Frog: “Ahhh. The mathematical genius and scientific genius Isaac Newton was a profoundly religious man! So was the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. QED. Your broad-brush claim is not valid. Numerous counter-examples exist.” T411sh: “And on the other side you have Humanism, a philosophy based on unity, progress, and the natural morality that has evolved into our instincts over time. The difference between Humanism and religion is just as clear as the difference between good and evil.” Green Frog: “Some humanists themselves are fanatics. They want to ban a substantial part of the human intelligence. This is why I give this warning to all parents and parents-to-be: You must protect your children’s brain-minds from fanatically humanistic psychic surgery. A new holocaust in classrooms looms, a destructive pedagogy from which degreed and esteemed graduates emerge half brain-dead...Aaaahrump!” Green Frog: “Humanity IS a part of nature, and well-meaning humanists damaging children’s brains is a serious attack on nature. Yes, indeed. There is a lot more to being bright than having a memory and applying memorized rules and memorized words…. As was demonstrated by Enrico Fermi when in a bizarre and unpredictable move he substituted a piece of paraffin for a piece of lead in his experiment on slow neutrons. Check out Fermi’s own personal account. It is on record. The humanist manifesto is too simple. We live in a much more complex world than all the humanists I have encountered are willing to examine and explore.” Beware but Be Free. Read some raindrops. Because Green Frog loves the rain.
