May 2, 2005 As usual, Tom Pain doesn’t get it. My take on Spike Lee doesn’t mean he is a genius because of isolated acts and quotations (which were put in the article as a background reference). The real genius of Spike is his surviving the game and capturing the essence of black life. The fact is, Pain—like his alter ego Hammer Toes Lewis—simply doesn’t get it, nor did I expect that from him and others like him. When one believes he has a monopoly on the truth and that “White is right and the standard by which all others should be judged,” argument is a waste of time. Read some of Ken Hughes and Ron’s old articles for confirmation. California gas prices are absolutely ridiculous. There is no justification for gas prices rising form $2.30 six weeks ago to $3.21. No wonder BG-Dub and Cheney wanted to keep their energy policy meeting secret. I’m not buying that b.s. about supply and demand. This is pimping in its highest form. One Texas town has launched a protest against Exxon and city fathers say they will continue until the price of gas falls to $1.30 a gallon. They’d find better results waiting for the sun to fall from the sky. reports on the demise of Barry Bonds’ bat speed were greatly exaggerated. Bonds has found his rhythm and his knee and elbow aren’t bothering him as much as speculated. However, I still don’t see him playing the entire season. A stint or two on the disabled list might be just what the doctor ordered, so that in the post-season Bonds is again the most feared slugger in the game. Another thing: Why aren’t more pitchers intentionally walking St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols? At the very least, he is Barry Bonds circa 2003. While on the subject of sports, how ‘bout Kobe Bryant, Gilbert Arenas and Ron Artest? Wouldn’t it be sweet revenge if the Sacrament Kings somehow won the NBA title and league Commissioner David Stern had to present the O’Brien trophy to Artest—on live TV? David Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence,” is an underrated movie. The film stars Viggo Mortenson and a brief, but potent performance from Ed Harris. Also on my Must See list is “Hustle and Flow,” a ghetto rags-to-riches tale that features a stellar performance by Terrence Howard. For the first time in three years I’m watching “The Sopranos,” television’s best written dramas. To see the reclusive Lauren Bacall make an appearance speaks volumes as to how well respected the show’s writers are. Michael Rapaport is one of the most underrated actor working in Hollywood. I first saw him in 1992‘s “Zebrahead,” playing a wannabe white teen with a black girlfriend. He also appeared in Spike Lee’s, “Bamboozled” (2000), Quentin Tarantino’s “True Romance,” (1993), and did a funny turn as a dim-witted ex-con in Woody Allen’s “Small-Time Crooks,”(2000). Rapaport currently stars in the Fox networks Sunday sit-com , “The War At Home.” De-regulation is supposed to spawn competition and make pricing for services more competitive. But the deregulation of phone companies, utilities (in California), and the cable TV industry has had the opposite effect. Expect to see the same scenario unfold with “Gouge Fest 21”—the oil companies raping of the American consumer. Can anyone say “collusion”?. Next month my kids and I plan to go camping in the Sierra foothills (California) with another family. This will mark their first outdoor excursion. The heat will be stifling during the day and too cold at night, but nothing beats a clear view of the stars, the sound of streams running at night and the smell of coffee at four in the morning. The immigration debate can best be resolved with a moratorium on ALL immigration—not just that south of the border, That isn’t immigration, but repatriation. Remember, before the Lamplighters sang “This Land Is Your Land,” a lot of this land was their land. ‘Til next time… ------------ About the author: Timothy N.
