![]() By Jack Lepiarz May 2, 2006 I am not quick to anger. I have a temper, but I control it. If something gets on my nerves, I generally ignore it and move on. However, I cannot move on, and I cannot ignore the constant remarks from the folks who want to pass off the anti-war movement as "anti-American." To be American is to be strong in one's beliefs. It would in fact be ANTI-AMERICAN NOT to express one's beliefs and one's hatred for the war IN IRAQ. Nobody protested the war in Afghanistan. Why? Because we had a legitimate reason. Members of Al-Qaeda hijacked our airplanes and killed nearly 3,000 of our people. That is inexcusable, and so we took the appropriate action and took the fight to them. Anyone with any sense can figure out that Iraq was not involved with 9/11. At all. Period. Some Americans have confused Iraqis with the 19 hijackers--most of whom were in fact Saudi Arabian. In fact, none of the 19 hijackers were Iraqi. Furthermore, Bin Laden is still at large as Iraq continues to drain our resources and military--actually making us MORE VULNERABLE to attack. Not to mention that the administration has COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN about Bin Laden. I've mentioned this before, but I'll mention it again. There are two things that you never hear come out of George W. Bush's mouth. The first is Osama Bin Laden. In all of 2003, Bush mentioned Bin Laden's name a WHOPPING FOUR TIMES. I haven't heard him mention "weapons of mass destruction" in ages. Instead, he simply replaces these words with phrases that still sound good, despite the political doublespeak within them. Phrases like "We're spreading freedom," or "We're fighting them over there so that we don't have to fight them here." But, I'm digressing. The point of this article is to express my utter and thorough anger over being called an anti-American, or a Communist because of my beliefs. I used to get called that a lot a while ago. Back in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade when I disagreed with what somebody CONSERVATIVE said. Now, I emphasize conservative there because conservatives are the only ones that will actually call someone that. A liberal will not do that because a liberal is not stupid enough to actually think that the people that disagree with them are part of a grand conspiracy to destroy America. But you know what? Maybe I AM anti-American. For God's sake, I'm listening to the album "American Idiot" right now! How much more ANTI-AMERICAN can you get? And my waving a sign that says "Bush is more evil than Bin Laden?" Of course, that has nothing to do that Bush is directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan civilians--thousands more than were killed in 9/11. I actually just think that Bin Laden is an absolute SAINT, and want to go join Al-Qaeda and take part in a Jihad so I can go to heaven and get my 72 virgins. Sounds like jolly good fun to me. That's sarcasm, by the way. I express my discontent because I honestly believe that we have no place in Iraq. It has nothing to do with my having a personal vendetta against George W. Bush or because I hate America. How dare you accuse me of that? Do you really need to sink to the indignation of accusing someone of being unpatriotic because they disagree with you? There is NOTHING WRONG with marching PEACEFULLY to express your discontent with what the government is doing. The people that want to silence the voice of dissent--whatever their reasons may be--are the truly anti-American ones. They are the ones that want everyone to think the same way that they do, and will resort to anything--even violence to make people see their logic. If you don't believe me, you can look at Kent State, some 36 years ago. Some people will see me as extreme. They will think that I do not pay attention to facts. They will think that I am "out of touch." They may very well call me an arrogant teenager, an anti-American, and a Muslim jihadist. These people, however, are exactly the kind of people I describe in this article--the kind that will not listen to reason--even when it is biting them in their nether-regions. I am not anti-American, and I am not a communist for that matter. And I will most certainly not stand to have someone accuse me, or what I stand for, of being unpatriotic, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS BECAUSE THEY DISAGREE WITH ME. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a senior at Madison High School.
