May 2, 2006 “1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.” (Proverbs 12: 1 NIV) Who says there is no humor in scripture? This is a flat statement of a biblical truth. There is knowledge in discipline. The man who is not afraid to be disciplined, especially by God, gains the spiritual knowledge necessary to keep pure from the distractions of a sinful world. Days that begin with prayer and a focus on the Spirit are days of peace and contentment. God safely protects the mind and the actions of the one who acknowledges the discipline contained in his relationship with the Lord. The Word of God is the important matter. The vanities of natural men, although always present and laced with temptation are easily ignored because of the far better gracious offerings of the Spirit. The man who cannot abide correction is stupid. God has set forth the truth to be examined. The truths contained in scripture have been attacked for ages without harm. Scripture still has the power to transform lives. Scripture still saves the man who is not afraid to be corrected by God. The man who cannot abide correction is in effect saying he is smarter than God. That is humorous in the extreme. “2 A good man obtains favor from the LORD, but the LORD condemns a crafty man. (Proverbs 12:2 NIV) There are many definitions of the term “good”. Many sinners believe themselves “good” because they haven’t killed anyone. The sinner doesn’t steal, lie, cheat or gossip. But neither does he give God glory for being given a chance for eternal life. Neither does he recognize the gift given to secure his redemption. The scriptures tell us that all men are born sinners. The proud man says that is not true. He is okay. He hasn’t harmed anyone. Yet, with that attitude he harms himself. The “crafty” man develops his own ways to eternal life. God isn’t really upset about sin. If one is “good” enough surely God will accept that one. God is a God of love and mercy. The “crafty” man leaves out the truth about God’s necessary attribute of holiness that forces him to judge and reject all forms of sin. God’s wrath is known throughout scripture as something that men ignored to the last day of their life. Then it was too late to understand the truth that God “condemns” the “crafty”. “3 A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.” (Proverbs 12: 3 NIV) We read every day of religious people being caught up in sin. Religion has never saved anyone. Religion has confused millions into believing they pleased God in their lives. The lies of religion are too many and subtle. There are millions who hold no religion. Though this may be better than knowing the truth and ignoring it, it still helps no one to say or suggest God does not exist. The most righteous religionist is often no better off than the most foul-thinking unbeliever. The scriptures declare that those who hold Jesus as Lord and Savior are righteous. It is the promise of adoption, a home in the heavens, comfort, wisdom and eternal relationship that God speaks to the one having received the atonement. “The righteous cannot be uprooted” is a promise of scripture from God to those who have come to love him. “Wickedness” can establish no relationship with God.
