Darfur And Iraq, Clooney And Malsbury

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
May 1, 2006

Somebody should ask the Darfur pushers a few questions:

1) If it was important for the USA to avoid acting unilaterally in Iraq, why is it now mandatory that we act unilaterally in Somalia?

2) If it was wrong to save the Marsh Arabs from genocide by Saddam Hussein's policy of drying up their wetlands, why is it suddenly mandatory that we interfere in a sovereign country to prevent genocide in Somalia?

3) If it was important for the USA to await the decisions and action of the United Nations and NATO regarding the war against terror in Iraq, why is it now OK for us to jump in and act while the UN and NATO continuue to dither and fiddle while Darfur burns?

4) If this is about helping victims of an evil regime, why was it wrong to help the victims of Saddam's regime but now mandatory that we help the victims of other evil Muslm warlords?

5) Is the difference in the far-left approach explainable because we have no immediate national interest in Somalia and so the left approves of acting out of "humanitarian grounds," but that we did have a national interest in Iraq and thus should have been forbidden from acting?

6) Is the difference in the far-left approach explainable because the victims of Saddam's regime were Arabs and the victims im Somalia are black?

7) Is the difference in the far-left approach explainable because the current Darfur genocide is just a convenient peg upon which to hang the usual anti-Bush rhetorical hat?

8) If the left wing had not been so obstructionist in Iraq, could it well be that the war there would be much further along and thus we would have the resources with which to help in Darfur?

Just a few simple questions, that's all. I can't wait for the answers.
