The Madding Crowd

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Mar. 31, 2006

Do you ever get the feeling around this place that all the writers are the same person? Sometimes I have had that feeling, and there are some charges that such is, to a great extent, the case. There have been charges and revelations that many of the writers are the same person, adopting the Sybillian multiple personality disorder that Sally Fields made famous in the old movie of the same name ("Sybil").

No matter what position one takes on any particular issue, one can count on one of these personalities taking the opposite and often being quite obnoxious about it. Sometimes the various personalities argue amongst themselves if no one takes the bait. Occasionally this can be fun for a few moments of mental exercise, but mostly it is just annoying.

Long ago, in the first few weeks I began writing here, I complained to the editor that there was too much bickering going on and not enough substance to many of the articles. As I said then, however, it's the editor's site and he can do what he wants... and he did, saying that it was the way he wanted it. This approach, the basically non-edited web site where anything goes, may encourage a lot of posting by many different authors at first, but then the more serious writers will tend to be turned off by the constant bickering. It may also discourage the inclusion of the web site in major search engines.

That appears to be what has happened here. When it came time to revamp the web site, it seemed to me that some of those multiple personalities became chief advisors and voted to continue with the essentially non-edited nature of the site and just make some cosmetic changes. This has, near as I can tell, not worked to make a web site more conducive to inclusion on google or yahoo. The supposed plan was to keep the major articles more substantive but to allow the argumentation on the forum part of the site. Some early success in that regard appears to have petered out as the folks who enjoy the arguing have grown tired of the forum and are back taking potshots at each other and themselves on the main page.

As for me, I'm not going too far from the Madding Crowd, out of a sense of some loyalty, but have been posting more on other sites in recent weeks. I would hate to see U-K die out, but suspect that will happen unless the editor takes the editing task more seriously.

As an aside, I tend to take more seriously the writings of those who have the courage to use their real names and to stick to that name. Posting under multiple assumed names suggests, to me, a cowardice and a mental instability which makes such postings less compelling reads.
