Mar. 28, 2006 Recently, we here at Useless Knowledge lost a good columnist and someone I consider to be one of the most eloquent people I have met in my life. Ken knows what real journalism is and he always gave me advice and encouraged me in the direction my writing needed to go. Ken gave me the idea that Useless Knowledge was not the place to air dirty laundry and to take matters that I felt wrong about to the email and not to slander someone I know nothing about. I’ve always held him in high regard for that. To hold your tongue and go to another columnist’s email kept petty stuff out of my columns and in turn has made me strive to be a better contributor to this eZine. I tried my best to come up with either newsworthy items I felt that should be drug out into the open or something light-hearted and fun for the readers. I could never be the caliber of a columnist that Ken was and is. I freely admit that I strive to be like Ken and to bring more of myself out in my writings. I read some of the other columnists tributes to Ken and one very unflattering column that should have been kept to that person’s mind or in an email to Ken himself. I have often thought that the main problem of UK is the columnists and contributors taking pot shots at each other. Even taking pot shots at each other on the message board isn’t correct either. Some of the outrageous things that have been put into columns, well, there are some people that should think before making false accusations. Take your beefs to the contributor of an article you don’t like to that person’s email. Lord knows the Jeff Gordon fans sure didn’t hesitate to flood me with hate mail last year when I wrote about his appearance at Wrigley Field. But that’s the past and I’ve learned a lot since then. I’ve tried to not only be a better contributor but to change my life as well. If you can take harsh words in black and white, then you can take harsh words in the real life world. I’ve managed to not take myself seriously anymore. Last year, we had a vote off of Ron Lewis. This year, Ken Hughes ups and quits of his own free will. And to think it’s not even June yet! So who’s head will be on the chopping block next? Who will be left to contribute? Who will be this year’s Columnist Of The Year? Boy is 2006 going to be interesting. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
